Open Wheel Champioships at Atomic Speedway
This Saturday, August 26th, the Rick's Trucks & Equipment BOSS tour will continue the "month of money" with the third consecutive higher purse event. This will be the 3rd Annual Open Wheel Championships at Atomic Speedway which will pay $3,000 to win and $300 to start with an enhanced purse throughout the main event. Also on the card Saturday night will be the All Star Circuit of Champions winged sprint cars along with modifieds and 305 sprints. The inaugural Open Wheel Championships were held in 2014 as an unsanctioned event and Rocklin, California driver Robert Ballou picked up the win in the Ray Marshall owned #33M. One year later, BOSS became the sanctioning body of the non wing portion and produced one of the most exciting finishes in auto racing history. The 25 lap main event ran caution free. On the final lap, 3 different drivers held the lead of the event, and all 3 came to the finish line in a 3 wide photo finish that saw Todd Kane edge out Landon Simon for the win, with the always exciting Dallas Hewitt tagging the wall and flipping down the front stretch finishing 3rd. Now, after a one year hiatus, the Open Wheel Championship returns. Racing action will begin on Thursday night and continue Friday with BOSS coming in for the Saturday finale. Dustin Smith of Russiaville, Indiana will lead the touring wingless drivers into battle. Smith is searching to become the tour's 2nd repeat champion, having won the title in 2012. However, Michael Fischesser has been on the move, steadily closing the gap on the points lead. Justin Owen, the spring winner at Atomic, has fallen to 3rd in points, but still within striking distance of the title. For Thursday and Friday times and prices, please refer to the Atomic Speedway website at www.atomicspeedway.net On Saturday, pit gates will open at 3 pm with geneal admission gates at 4. Hot laps will get underway at 6 pm. Adult general admission is $25 with seniors and veterans $22. Kids ages 12 and under are free. Pit passes are $40 with kids pit passes (age 6-12) $20. Kids 5 and under are free in the pits. For teams competing with BOSS on Saturday, fuel is available at the track. There are no membership or entry fees. Mufflers are NOT required for this event. We will be group qualifying in hot laps as we have done with all higher purse events. We will be using the Yellow transponders and rental fee will be $10 at pill draw.
