I just spent a very pleasant interlude sitting on the hill above the track upon which USAC midgets will race this coming Monday, July 3. If you haven't made up your mind, I strongly encourage you to come. There are grandstands both at the top of the hill and midway down. There is plenty of seating on the hillside, with lots of good shade. It was 90 when I was there and still very comfortable. I was told the track is like the Chili Bowl but a little longer. Sight lines are great. The track is just south of the Orr Building, so the parking around there should be more than adequate. Pits will be at each end of the track, which runs east/west, and we should be able to watch all the action in the pits also. I understand that both the usual exciting drivers plus Christopher and Rico are expected. Illinois fans, lets give this race (and Macon and Lincoln) strong support and hope this can become an annual event. All other midget fans, come to central Illinois and see some great racing. I'm excited. This should be a really good weekend.
We'll definitely be at the Fairgrounds Monday night. We'll also be at Macon Saturday night and Lincoln Sunday night.
Would love to see a series like this become an Independence Day holiday tradition here in Central Illinois.
This event at the State Fairgrounds certainly has the makings of being a great show. Given the lofty midget racing pedigree of the promoter and the effort they are putting into this event there is virtually no reason to believe that it won't. Could this deal be the beginnings of a new and exciting midget venue? Could a midget event staged at The Fairgrounds during the Illinois State Fair be out of the question? I for one would sure love to see it!!
Silver Crown Championship Dirt Cars properly driven on a one mile dirt track are classic poetry in motion. Using that analogy, Jack Hewitt is one of the greatest poets of all time.
I'll be at Lincoln and Springfield. Can't make Macon. Helping my parents move to a new house on Saturday.
Really hope the fairgrounds race is a hit and leads to more in the future. That venue could host a double header at night during the weekend of racing at the fair.
