Word has reached us of the death this morning of Wilbur "Wib" Spalding of Granite City, Ill. A frequent racer in the midwest during his career, he scored a 30-lap USAC National Sprint Car win at Salem (Ind.) Speedway on July 4 of 1968. USAC extends its deepest sympathies to the Spalding family and his many friends.

I had the privilege of watching Wib Spalding race in USAC and in dirt track "super modifieds" quite a few times. Jerry Shaw is correct: he drove 444 every time I saw him, including the small 4 after the larger 44 on Spalding-Murray sprinters.

Here is more info on the late great Wib Spalding. He was an amazing old time race driver.
He won:
34 track championships
4 150 lap features
3 200 lap features
1 300 lap feature
He had over 600 feature wins
His nephew had Wib tee shirts, showing his many racing accomplishments, made several year ago.
I gave mine to Bubby Jones who raced with Wib for many years.
