Perserverance for Hardy Boys

Coming into this weekend’s festivities at the Illinois State Fairgrounds on the Springfield Mile, Shane Cockrum and Hardy Boys Motorsports had a smile on their faces. They felt confident that it would be a good weekend and that all of the team’s hard work would finally pay off. Little did the Hardy crew know just how well it would pay off on the Illinois dirt. In a day that would run most drivers and teams into the ground, Shane came away with his best results to date in the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series and a first for Hardy Boys Motorsports.
Coming into Saturday’s racing action with the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series, Hardy Boys Motorsports and their number 15 Beast/Foxco had struggled with reliability. Bad luck seemed to follow them anytime they hit the track. The feisty group had continued to work at it, and thought they might get the results they desired at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the Hoosier Hundred as it was not to be. So the team regrouped and brought the teams number 15 entry backed by Four Seasons ACE Hardware, Donna’s Sweetwater Saloon, Simpson Race Products, Infinity Shocks, and R&R Enterprises to Springfield with Cockrum behind the wheel. They were confident that the issues that had plagued them on Illinois Capitals’ dirt had been put behind them. But during practice there was a problem with the car and Cockrum careened into the turn one wall hurting the car badly. The team jumped into action with help from several other teams and rebuilt the car in time to take a lap for qualifications. To everyone’s surprise the Hardy Boys Motorsports 15 came in with a lap that was good enough for 3rd quick behind 2012 and eventual 2013 Bettenhausen winner AJ Fike and 4 time winner Brian Tyler.
Because they had not qualified in their originally assigned spot, Cockrum was forced to start 11th in the field. Early in the going Shane settled in to a nice top 10 position and let the race come to him. As the laps wore down the Benton, Illinois natives’ steady pace paid dividends landing him in the 5th position as the checkered flag fell. It was Cockrum and Hardy Boys Motorsports first top 5 finish in USAC Silver Crown competition. After the race a very tired Cockrum commented; “we had ten guys in the pits today and we’d have never had this run today without a single one of them, if we’d have had 9 guys this car would still be a scrap pile. I’m super proud of these guys and appreciate everything they do for me.”
The Hardy Boys Motorsports team was able to finally get a result that they deserved after so much hard work by all the guys. They will return to action next week September 1st at the Duquoin State Fairgrounds for the running of the Ted Horn 100.
