I know he won at Limaland ( Ohio ) back in the early 70's because I had my pic taken with him on the frontstretch. Wish I knew where that pic went.

Dick Gains was a Great driver and I got to watch him at Lawrenceburg back in the late 70's. Here are a few photos of him from there. He also won Knoxville one year.

Edges Opperman for 1974 Knoxville National win. Passes on last corner of last lap driving for Karl Kinser. No wings, helluva a drive!

Dick Gaines has to be included in any conversation about the greatest sprint car drivers of all time.Back in the late '90s one night after the races at TSS I had the pleasure of leaning on the bed of a truck, drinking beer and talking racing with Dick like we were old friends.....it's still one of my fondest racing memories!!!

Dick had 'em covered at TSS in the early/mid '70's. Man, he was tough. His getting hurt at Champaign, IL. opened up the seat for Steve in Karl's car. And the rest is history.Tom Helfrich had 'em covered year after year in the late models at the same time. Those were some great days at TSS with only two classes being run - sprints and late models- and excellent drivers in both divisions. Tommy was a top notch driver in his day for those that are not aware of it. He finished second one year at the World 100 while crossing the finish line backwards.
