When the North American Midget Auto Racing Series was in business, we used to be in the Indianapolis area a lot. One thing was, that I always took the time to stop by Howerton's shop and visit mostly with Jackie. I also would visit a little with his boys on the way in, but mostly with him. At the time, in the back of the shop, he was building a HOT ROD with a FORD engine in it. MAN, what a MASTER BUILDER, plus he was easy to visit with. My chit chats with him were always a "DESERT" before heading back up to Michigan.
I go to Arizona every year these days, wonder how to get in touch with him, anybody know?

Jackie won the greatest Hoosier 100 of all !!!!! (1974) Wally Dallenbach was one of George Bignotti's drivers that year but rarely ran the dirt and never cared for the dirt. Howerton, who had done some fabrication work for Bignotti got the dirt car ride. The car was powered by a turbo-offy (one of the first). At this time, even though USAC had severed the dirt cars from the Indy car national points series, Al Sr., Mario (Vel's Parnelli/Viceroy Racing) and Foyt had continued their dirt car programs. 1974 was pretty much the last hurrah for the participation of these guys. Howerton sat on the pole and literally destroyed the field for about 3/4 of the race but, as the track got slicker the turbo-offy started losing grip and both Al Sr and Mario started reeling Jackie in. On the white flag lap, Al nearly got by Howerton on the back strait but, Howerton was able to hold him off and he was able to out drag race both Al and Mario to the checkered flag. It was a spectacular finish and the last great year for the Dirt cars. After these guys left the series, the Hoosier 100 and the other dirt races lost a lot of their "Luster". The last tie to the Indy cars and their drivers was severed for good. The Dirt Cars became pretty much an extension of the sprint car crowd after that.
