50th Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA Season Begins Saturday at Montpelier
By Alex Wollf
The golden anniversary season of the Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA TQ Midgets begins this Saturday night at the Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Indiana. Much has changed in the half century since Mel Harpring won the first UMRA championship in 1961 but the one thing that has remained constant is the exciting brand of action that fans can expect when the UMRA hits the track.
Saturday night the UMRA will make their first trip to the Montpelier Motor Speedway since August 19, 2007. The race on Saturday night will also be the first of four trips to Montpelier Motor Speedway for the Dutch Mill Buffet UMRA TQ Midgets in the 2010 season.
As the 2010 season gets set to roll off, there are several bits of history that are possible. When talking about the history of the UMRA one must begin with Terry Goff. In 2010 the Fortville, Indiana pilot will be in search of his fourth title in a row and fifteenth of his illustrious career. Terry also enters the season with 111 career wins, four wins away from the 115 wins of Rick Meyer which is second on the all-time wins list. Ron Combs of Greensburg, Indiana is in search of his third series championship to go with titles won in 1989 and 2005. A third title would make Combs just the fourth driver in UMRA history to win three or more titles. Ron Combs has 22 career wins, one win shy of tying Bob Hamilton for sixth on the all-time wins list. In a season that promises to be a historic one, Goff and Combs are just two of the drivers to watch in 2010 as others like Doug Roland, Jason Goff, Michael Koontz, just to name a few are hungry to etch their names in the record books of the UMRA this season.
The UMRA welcomes aboard the Dutch Mill Buffet in Milroy, Indiana as the title sponsor in 2010 after a great 2009 season of giving out gift certificates to competitors on a nightly basis. The race at Montpelier will also begin the start of another exciting program as the 2010 Tony Stewart Rookie Challenge opens up. The highest finishing rookie at each UMRA race will receive $50 with prize money going to the top three rookies in the final point standings.
Fans will want to come out to Montpelier on Saturday night for the start of an exciting and special 2010 season. Gates open at 4:00 PM, hot laps are at 6:00 PM, and racing at Montpelier is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
