I am sitting here wondering who you all thought were the best racecar driver you have ever seen? I am not going to give any.

IMO, on dirt, two stand alone. Dick Gaines and Steve Kinser. Both were so good that it almost seemed like there was something supernatural about them. JJ and Jay Drake had that same thing, for a shorter period of time. And Jon Stanbrough, obviously. Even though I initially left him out.

talentwise, Parnelli Jones. Talent and accomplishment? Al Sr. Al beat AJ and Mario on the big tracks (i.e. Indy), beat AJ and Mario (handily!) on the mile dirts, won a bunch of cab races (Palmer Dodge) against some of the best in the business, and I personally watched him smoke Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, Mark Donahue, George Fullmer, Swede (David) Savage and Pete Revson on the road course in the Retzloff Chemical Lola and the Johnny Lightning car (1969-70). That's doing it all in my book.

Off the top of my head, without a lot of thought, these come to mind:

On dirt: Jack Hewitt, Lealand McSpadden, Dave Darland & Don Branson

On pavement: Dave Steele, Rich Vogler, Eric Gordon & Parnelli Jones

On both: Larry Dickson, Gary Bettenhausen, Robbie Stanley & Jay Drake

A.J. Foyt

A.J. won at everything. Indy, Daytona, Le Mans, Champ Cars on dirt, Sprints & Midgets plus USAC Stock Cars along with ? NASCAR wins
:dologob:

Stewart is the only other guy I would compare to Foyt. Tony had the desire to win at anything.

The best was Parnelli Jones, smooth and a nice guy that won a lot of stuff as well.

There are many drivers who conquered their area of the sport. A.J. in Indy cars, Richard Petty & David Pearson in NASCAR, Richie Evans in pavement modifieds, Frankie Schneider & Will Cagle in dirt modifieds. Steve Kinser in sprints, Dutch Schaeffer in midgets. Jack Hewitt in SC. But the one driver I have seen who had the most God given ability to sit behind the wheel of a race car - any race car - and make it go fast was Ollie Silva. The man was simply unbelieveable. RIP, Ollie.:checkered::thumb:
