hey everyone...bill baskins past away last night.. he was the security guard at 16th street speedway. for everyone that knew him just wanted to inform you the very sad news.. his health wasnt all that great but he still smiled and always said he loved being at the racetrack when he could...because the racers were always great to him no matter how good/bad their night had been... my prayers go out to his family and friends.......RIP Bill

My condolences to the Baskins family. I am sorry that I missed the 16th Street Speedway era. Seems like a great midget venue was lost.
Iam sure Mr. Baskins will be missed by many and including those with ties to the former speedway.


I do know fellow USAC Regional Midget Series competitor and first-time poster to IOW , Travis Young !

Travis scored third place in points in 2007 behind another lost friend and racer , the incomparable Alex Pruett.
Travis has himself achieved the runner-up position in three of the last four years !
Look for the # 11 in '08 ! Best wishes , Travis !

January 4, 2008


William David "Bill" "Hooch" Baskett 63, Beech Grove, passed away January 2, 2008. He was born February 28, 1944 in Rensselaer, IN to Hubert and Hazel Baskett. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and a retired contractor, also having worked security at 16th Street Speedway and Indianapolis. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Hubert Wayne & Teri Baskett of Murfreesboro, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy & Steve Urich of Indianapolis; sister-in-law, Betty Fern Baskett of Jeffersonville, IN; companion, Nancy Sue Winchester; 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughter, Alice Avenue Baskett, and brother, James Martin Baskett. Military graveside services by Glasgow D.A.V. Chapter 20 at Monroe County Memorial Lawn. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Yokley-Trible Funeral Home, with bro. Darrick Proffitt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

I remember Bill from my days of working USAC at 16th Street. Sorry to hear the news, RIP Bill :checkered:
