Daleville’s Aaron Pierce won his fourth Glen Niebel Classic taking over the point on lap 22 after making contact with early leader Donnie Adams Jr. Pierce’s win in the Niebel Classic makes him the most suddessful driver in the Sprint Car Challenge Series Built by the UAW with 6 career USSA wins and one championship.
Adams took the lead from the outside of the front row at the start with Pierce moving into the second spot after starting fourth. With Pierce running on the back of Adams car, he went to the inside of turn three on lap 22. The two made contact with Adams coming to a stop against the outside retaining wall. Pierce was then chased by Kody Swanson until lap 71, when Swanson slowed giving up the second spot to 2014 race winner Caleb Armstrong. Swanson who had attempted to get inside of Pierce several times when the front-runners got into lapped traffic, was forced out of the event with an overheating problem. Armstrong was never able to mount a serious challenge on Pierce, unlike last year when he took the lead late in the race. Pierce won the race for the first time in 2003 adding wins in 2012 and 2013. For Pierce is was his record sixth career feature win with the United States Speed Association’s Sprint Car Challenge Built by the UAW “We had an awesome car,” Pierce said. “This is my favorite track, I love racing here. “I got inside of Donnie (Adams) and we made contact,” he said. “It was a racing deal. I know he’s upset with me. I apologize for that.” Jimmy McCune finished third after starting ninth with Billy Wease and rookie Jason Fuller rounding out the top five. Tyler Roahrig, making his first start at Anderson Speedway after a late model crash last year, started 12th in the field and drove to a sixth place finish Pierce set fast time during qualifications turning a lap at 11.325-seconds to edge out Armstrong (11.405-seconds) and Adams (11.441-seconds). The Sprint Car Challenge Series Returns to action at Anderson Speedway for the 67th Payless Little 500 presented by UAW-GM. The 2015 edition of the legendary pavement sprint car race will be held on Saturday May 23. |
