STARS National Midgets Hit by Rain Again at Grundy County

June 21, 2014

By: Rich Murray

The start of summer is a harbinger of sunshine, backyard grill-outs, and tons of racing action all across the country. All of those things will have to wait for another day. Unfortunately, on the first official day of summer 2014, the weather put a wet blanket on the night’s activities at the Grundy County Speedway. Saturday night’s docket was to feature the D’arcy GMC STARS National Midgets, Classic Modifieds, INEX Legends, CSR Super Cups, and the Midwest Legacy Series.

The sole action of the night took place during hot laps. Under threatening skies, 13 midgets took the track in two separate practice sessions. Among the midget drivers in attendance were last Saturday night’s twin-feature winners Travis Young and Austin Prock. Also taking to the track were Terry Ahern, Tyler Baran, Mario Clouser, Brad Greenup, Kyle Hamilton, Nick Hamilton, Billy Hulbert, Kyle Kettmann, Ryan Probst, Tyler Trainor, and Nick Wagner.

Mere minutes after the checkered flag was waved to wrap up midget practice, the skies opened up. After the stoppage of on-track activity, and as the precipitation continued to fall, STARS race officials made the call to cancel the remainder of the night’s racing activities. For the most part, June has not been kind to the racing teams and fans of STARS as this marked the second scheduled event that was rained out in the past three weeks.

The D’arcy GMC STARS National Midgets, Classic Modifieds, INEX Legends, CSR Super Cups, and Midwest Legacy Series have a bye week next week, but will return on Saturday night, July 5th for the “Freedom 50,” which also marks the first appearance of the King of the Wing Sprint Car Shootout. In a recent exhibition run at the Grundy County Speedway, Davey Hamilton, an 11-time Indy 500 starter and the organizer of the King of the Wing Sprint Car Shootout, ran several laps in a wing sprint car, timing in with a top lap of 13.1. The speeds are sure to be quick in this rare appearance for sprint cars at the 1/3 mile paved oval.

Ticket prices for the “Freedom 50”/King of the Wing Sprint Car Shootout are $25 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under. Grundy County Speedway is located one mile north of I-80 on Rt. 47 in Morris, Illinois.
