Great issue for Hoosiers this month with feature articles on the Little 500, the Kokomo Speedway, and Indiana quarter midget racer Justin Peck. The Kokomo piece includes a couple of cool photos from over 50 years ago.:applaud::thumb

I can remember running around that place in the early sixties as a kid. There are a number of local drivers that have pictures of Kokomo back in the day. I remember when the local T.V. station had races on channel three I think, Dick Bronson and Charlie Cropper used to announce from the track and I do mean from the track Charlie would ride shotgun while Dick raced, of course this was in a stock car and most of the time it was during a figure eight race. Anybody remember the races where you brought your street car in a raced? How about the guy that flipped his girlfriends car and later we found out that it was his girlfriends husbands car. (He was at work) :redflag: No doubt I got to witness some of the best open wheel drivers around, wing and non wing. :respect:

I remember that one Jerry, in fact the husband worked with one of my neighbors. The first race that I remember was a USAC midget race around 1966 or 1967. If anyone has any old pictures like the ones in the story I would love to see them. I was just telling some people at Paragon about the old speaker truck, I guess that picture shows I wasn't lying.

I wish that article was one of their three part stories. I wanted to learn and see more of the older days at the track.

How about the nite a drunken lawyer, silvercrown owner, named fair play Chas paid a guy to hot wire the water truck. After the races he hot lapped the water truck till the black flag and an angry Kokomo track owner.

I remember as a kid an El-Camino turning over...It was krazy...good times...Its funny the stuff you remember as a kid...and the stuff you dont remember that you should....good times...

Grew up at Kokomo Speedway. Maybe thats why I still feel like a kid when I am at any racetrack. Sitting there watching Ron Fisher, Loiue Mann, Buzz Gregrory, Paul Joyce and of course Charlie Sarver in his button up dress shirt trying to get that car to run,among all the other regulars. Getting there early and watching the cars pull in, hoping Rick Ferkel or one of the other traveling"shoes" would show up and try to take the cash from one of our own. Great times.. Grateful to the O'Conner family for saving our track. Gerat article Brett.

How about Opp saying the prayer on the front stretch when he would roll into town. Anybody remember Mr. Lipkey funeral (Bill) that had to be the best time I have ever had at a funeral, that guy was a promoter even after the lights went out. Please do not be offended by my memories of the funeral, Bill, Vic (The best flagman ever) and Jim are very good friends and I mean no disrespect by my comments. How about Tim Gee getting wound up in the fence at the entrance to the pit's. Or Bobby Kinser telling a young pup there are no kids in sprint cars, then the cigar hit the ground. :icon_smile_blackeye How about the old Henry Jay that ran with the stock cars? Mom would put dinner wrapped in tin foil on the top of our motor and by the time we got to Kokomo dinner was done and ready to eat, that was the few years we lived in Logansport.

Jerry, I agree with you on all counts about the Lipkeys. I used to stop at the building where they held Mr. Lipkey's funeral and talk. He was a true free spirit. I also agree Vic was the best flagman ever. As I said earlier any one with old pictures, I would love to see them.
