A new track and another date at an old favorite bring the number of races on the MTQRL preliminary schedule to 15 events.
Gas City I-69 Speedway is scheduled to host the MTQRL three-quarter midgets on Friday evening May 31st. The following night, Saturday June 1st, the MTQRL will travel 20 miles east to the Montpelier Motor Speedway setting up a nice doubleheader race weekend for our competitors and fans. The Gas City, Ind. track has been a staple on the local sprint car scene for over 15 years but 2013 will mark the first appearance of the MTQRL at the quarter mile oval. Over the years many drivers have used their experience in three quarter midgets as a stepping stone to sprint cars and several of those drivers compete as Gas City. In fact, 2012 Gas City Sprint Champion Billy Puterbaugh began his open wheel career in three quarter midgets back in 1993. The Shelby County Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Ind. has been an indispensable part of the MTQRL schedule hosting 19 of the 64 events held to date. When an arsonist set fire to their historic covered grandstand in June of last year the MTQRL and the Shelby County Fair Association had to reschedule events to coincide with the installation of the temporary grandstands. With construction of the new structure slated to start this fall once again the temporary grandstands have become an important part of scheduling dates. As noted on the preliminary schedule the MTQRL will be racing at the Shelby County Fair on July 2nd and an additional date has now been confirmed for Saturday evening June 22nd. There are additional dates being negotiated at Shelbyville and other tracks with the final schedule to be released on March 16th at the Pre Season Meeting.
