Red Hot Mel Kenyon Midget Series Point Race Heads

With just two races remaining on the 2012 USSA Mel Kenyon Midget Series racing calendar, the Championship point battle rages on. The series closes out its dirt races on September 8 at US 24 Speedway and heads to the finale at Anderson Speedway October 6.

Point leader Travis Young tops runner-up Dameron Taylor by only 53 points. Jessica Bean trails by 158 points and Cordy Horn is just 7 markers behind Bean.

The maximum points available to any driver for one race in USSA racing is 245. A driver can achieve that mark only by sweeping an event from qualifying to the feature and leading every lap.

For example, if Young has a bad night and Taylor wins his heat while Young finishes 5th, Taylor is fast qualifier and Young comes in 6th fast, Taylor leads a lap and wins the feature while Young finishes 8th he gains 70 points and takes the points lead.

Both Young and Taylor have been consistent top five runners all season, often racing each other nose to tail. Bean and Horn can win the championship with the right set of circumstances as well. One race on dirt and one race on pavement will decide it all—adding extra excitement to the end of the season.
