After racing full time with the World of Outlaws sprint car series for the last eight years, “Double Down” Jason Sides and Sides Motorsports announced today that they intend to sue the World of Outlaws ownership entity, World Racing Group, to recover Driver Point Fund monies, Car Owner Point Fund monies, tow money and other benefits owed by the series to them. The dispute has been simmering for a couple of months, and Jason, the Series’ 2003 Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year, characterized the issue as follows:
“In August of this year, I called the World Racing Group CEO, Brian Carter, and asked him for permission to run a non-Outlaw race in Fargo, ND a few weeks later. He said he couldn’t talk right then but promised to call me back the next morning at 10 o’clock. He never called me, so I texted him two more times to ask for permission to run the race. Never receiving a response from him telling me otherwise, I figured I was cleared to race. Two other World of Outlaw teams were racing that same non-sanctioned race, the #9 car and the #15, so I showed up and raced…didn’t do very well, though ! The next thing I know, the World of Outlaws come around and tell me they are cutting my tow money in half, cutting my pit passes in half and not going to pay me my Driver and Owner Point Fund money at the end of the year. They told me that regardless of where I finish in the points [currently 6th] they are only gonna pay me last place money. That’s about a $40,000 difference, and I am not going to roll over on a $40,000 ‘fine’ just because Brian Carter was too busy or didn’t want to call me back. We will let a jury decide whether what they are doing to me is right. I’ve supported this Series for a long, long time. In the years I’ve raced with the Outlaws, I’ve ran 100% of their races. If they think they can just keep my money that I’ve worked all year for, and that I’ll just whimper back to Tennessee, they’re wrong. Maybe they’ll change their minds before the Banquet, but right now they don’t even return phone calls. If they pay me my money, great. Otherwise, I’m suing them.”
In addition to his Rookie of the Year honor, Jason was the famed King’s Royal victor in 2004, and has finished 5th in both of the last two years on the Outlaw circuit. Driving his Wetherington Tractor Service “7S”car, Jason is a fan favorites wherever he races. Next year, he’ll race wherever he chooses.

Remember when USAC pulled this, look where USAC is now. It's still a good series but it's not as prominant as it once was.

go get em jason !!! take on the big machine, they deserve to have their balls busted, never have i heard such a crock of crap.. it is your racecar you race where you want to..i back you 110% if ted was still running it i bet it would be handled different, while he was shrewd i belive he was fair.

If things are as bad financially for WoO as has been rumored for a while, they're doing ths for financial reasons, and no other reason than that.

How can they call them selves Outlaws with rules like this anyway? Racing like Sides wanted to do is what an Outlaw used to be!

I like watching Jason Sides and he is always friendly when he has time. This has turned into a no-win for both Sides and WoO.

NOW: Is anyone thinking about why WoO has this rule?
The problem starts once the WoO schedule is made public. Tracks/promoters within a few hours of a track hosting a WoO event, where the schedule has a day or two break, can take advantage of what the series has put together. Using some crafty PR, they can say all of the WoO drivers will be there to race. They could even offer the WoO regulars no entry fee considering how may fans will fill the stands. And, certainly, the drivers want to race as much as they can just to pay the bills.

However, taking advantage of what WoO, or any touring series, has to offer without paying a sanctioning fee is either smart or unscrupulous depending on your position.
(ie: Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?)

Racephoto makes a good point but, Jason called WoO & asked if he could race. Should've given Jason an answer when he asked. As I've stated before when I was a race official, "Do your job, if you wanna watch the races buy a ticket and sit in the stands"

I am not trying to defend WoO/WMG, and I know it's popular to bash them, but it seems there are some obvious facts people are missing.

Mr. Sides can race wherever he wants, whenever he wants. The WoO has rules that he can choose to abide by or tell them to jump off a cliff. How is this different from telling a track you won't run their tire, spec fuel, or engine size but still want to be paid for the win?


From what little I know about the law (cough, cough), nobody forced Mr. Sides to agree to WoO rules for their points fund, travel money or contingency dollars at the start of the season. He obviously knew what the rules were if he even had to ask for permission. If he wants to participate in the up side ($$$), he has to play by their rules. Right?
