I know this has been discussed before...as far as the issue on whether or not drivers should have one-way radios so officials can communicate with drivers...but I think it would have saved a lot of equipment if the teams had them at THAT when they had the 5 or 6 car pile up. I wonder if anybody that said they didn't wanna spend the extra few hundred bucks to purchase the radio would change their mind if they were in an accident like that and tore up even more money worth of equipment?? Just thinking outloud. I was against them at first, but after this I think it would be very helpful; would help l/u's too.

Are you talking about the one-way radios where officials talk to the drivers or are you talking about transponders where the car crosses a wire buried in the track for timing and scoring?

I could be wrong, but I think MSCS doesn't require one-way radios. I am sure USAC does though. Feel free to correct me.

I'm not sure that USAC even requires them except in Silver Crown...I know MSCS doesnt require them, but my point was that maybe they should. It might have kept the incident Sunday from taking place...

We use the radios in ASCS. They're good for line-ups, etc. (although I think the infield officials should also have a black board as well as the radios in case of radio malfunction), but it's been my experience that I've seen the yellow light long before I heard it in my ear. Remember, the person transmitting has to see the yellow before they can warn the drivers and, usually, by that time I've already seen the light.

Some tracks previously had a system in which a yellow light came on on the car dash anytime the flagman flipped on the track yellow. This may have helped, but things happen pretty fast out there, especially when you're looking into the sun.

USAC Sprint rule book rule 320.A.1 - "One-way radios will be required for all cars."

I am sure things happen very quickly, I've raced things that were not nearly as powerful as sprints and things happened quickly even then. I was just eluding to situations such as Terre Haute where dust/sun was blinding and drivers couldn't see an accident nearly a straightaway ahead of them.
