The Doty race was great! And, for once, the internet gods allowed the full feature stream.
What the heck is the "Monster Midwest NonWing Sprints"? Is that the sanctioning body for the Illinois Sprint Week? Does it operate all year? Or, is it just an advertising slogan for this race? It seems as though I hear about a new name for sprints and/or midgets every week. ![]() Were all the sprint drivers ok? There were too many on their heads last night. BTW, USAC has posted the results on their Sprint site instead of the Midget site. Someone might want to move them. |

Dick,
I'm running out of superlatives to use to describe the showdowns between these two great drivers. Bryan Clauson and Brad Kuhn. They both just step it up to another level, any time the other shows up, over their shoulder, poised to challenge them for the top spot. As evidenced by the races two main battles for the lead, last night. The first one was the slide-job swap-o-rama between Kuhn and Darren Hagen. It was fun to watch while it lasted, but you just knew that this wasn't the main entree of the night's dining. It was just the appetizer. Especially, since while all of this was unfolding, the patient one was laying low and watching, from the best seat in the house. And after a lapped car took Hagen out, the stage was set. Then, before the restart, as you saw the #17B with the #39 pacing slowly behind him, you just knew "OK, now it's on!!" And was it ever. Another serious high stakes, high speed, top shelf rumble, between the two best midget drivers on the planet, at this given moment. I felt so fortunate to be there and so bad for those that didn't get a chance to be. I'm so ready for Indiana Midget Week right now, I could hardly describe it! And even if I could, you probably couldn't understand me, because my voice is still shot from last night. Jerry

One of my favorite parts was Darren Hagen's steering wheel toss at Evan Lentz after he ran out of room. Lentz pulled over for Kuhn in the high groove but apparently didn't realize Hagen was right on Kuhn's tail. CRUNCH. Hagen was flyin'.
The scarriest was the sprint crash in the feature involving Jimmy Davies and Craig Budde, with Budde's car spinning around with teh throttle stuck open. When I drove through a fairly heavy rain coming through St. Louis, I thought we were DONE. Glad i was wrong. Great racing. After transferring through the B main, Darland was up to third before he spun, making it back up to eighth. I believe you are correct that the Monster Midwest Non Wing Sprints is the name used by sanctioning group for Illinois Sprint Week. There is a modified group in Illinois going by Monster Midwest Modifieds. After two rainouts, it is good to see the Gundakers get this race in. First time at Tri City. Great place. Watch for stories and photos in the Hawkeye Racing News. |

I got a kick out of watching the USAC flagman work last night. A lot of flagmen don't do a "half way" crossed flags, or a "two laps to go" signal anymore. His "furl and twirl" wrist motions with the flags right before giving the half-way and "two to go" signals is very entertaining, and I would have to think helps the drivers see them.
