Sprint - The act or an instance of sprinting, especially a short race at top speed.

Back in the days of real USAC sprint cars, with real Indy 500 drivers, the standard was 40 laps, with a number of 50s, twin 50s and a couple of 100 lappers...... and these races were run on real half mile tracks, not the little podunk quarter mile midget tracks they use today.
Or the dumbest feature ever! Running 100 mile SC cars in 50 lap races on a half mile. Those races should be 200 laps. Do the math.......

I suppose that part of the reason is so that the hundreds of
sportsmanhobbythundercarstreetstocks, who actually pay to keep these places open, can run their features.

*** are you taking about? When have you seen a 100 lap sprint car race on a half mile???? If your ran 100 lap on a half now with 410 ci. You would have to stop every 30 -40 laps for fuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Duke, is right. It's mainly a fuel consumption problem with the bigger motors they run today. Back in the day they only ran 305's and a 327 was a "big" engine.

I think certain tracks would be an entertainment "challenge". Others it would be very entertaining. The Little 500 is, obviously, 500 laps and is about the most entertaining race you could get. The Hut 100 used to be great before midget racing died. I remember tons of twin 50's at Winchester, etc... that were fantastic.
In general though, a sprint is a sprint, meaning as fast as possible until the end. So 30-40 laps is probably good. Maybe a few twin 50's now and then to shake things up? Two features, double points days to attract cars?
David.

I can remember when I was a kid, late 60's early 70's that they ran what was called the Coca-Cola 100 at the old Burg. I think they stopped at the 50 lap point to have a fuel stop. Fishburger may be able to confirm this, but I am pretty sure I have this right. Bob Bressert
