Hall Handles Attica, Swanson Sweeps Waynesfield

The Rick's Truck & Equipment BOSS traditional sprint car tour wrote a whole new chapter into the history books by running their inaugural event at Attica Raceway Park on Friday night. One night later, the traveling band of true outlaw racers rolled into Waynesfield Raceway Park for the 6th annual "Dick Spencer Memorial" event. Very nice crowds were on hand at both venues and excellent car counts treated the fans to some fantastic racing.

Friday night at Attica Raceway Park was the first time traditional wingless sprints had run Attica Fairgrounds oval since 2003. A tremendous field of 42 race cars signed in for battle. The five heat race events alone were worth the price of admission. Promoter Rex LeJune had the track fast from top to bottom. Heat races were won by Cody Gardner, Todd Keen, Kody Swanson, Luke Hall and Matt Westfall. Twin B-Main events were scored by Mike Miller and Steve Little.

The 24 car A-Main roared to green with "Chocolate" Chad Wilson blasting out to an early lead from his pole starting position. However, 4th starting Luke Hall was on the hunt early, quickly reeling in Wilson. Working lap #6, Hall wrestled the lead away and began to assert command. The first of 4 caution flew on lap 9 when "Superman" Arnie Kent spun.

Back under green, Hall set the pace with a determined Wilson trying to fend off the challenges of 5th starting Kody Swanson. The race's only red flag would come out on lap 13 when Dustin Ingle couldn't avoid a melee in turn 1 and went flipping off the end of the track. He emerged unhurt.

On the restart, Hall again could rocket out to a sizable margin, but California native Swanson finally stole 2nd place from Wilsom. He would get to Hall on long green flag runs but could get no help from the rest of the field as 3 more cautions would fly for Andy Feil, Mike Burkin and Aaron Middaugh.

At the stripe, it was Hall holding on for the win in the Jon Nelson #9N over a fast closing Kody Swanson in the Kent Wolters #12. Rounding out the top 5 were Shawn Westerfeld, Matt Westfall, Dustin Stroup. The rest of the top were Chad Wilson, Justin Owen, Cooper Clouse, Stuart Brubaker, Drew Rader. Owen was the Bridge Restaurant "Hard Charger" of the event. He was one of 3 drivers advancing 9 positions, but was the highest of the 3 finishers.

On Saturday, the tour traveled southwest to Greg and Tami Shobe's Waynesfield Raceway Park for the 6th annual Dick Spencer Memorial. This was the fourth time the event has been sanctioned by BOSS. 34 wingless sprint cars registered to battle on the quarter mile bullring. The four heat races were won by Matt Westfall, Kody Swanson, Luke Hall and tour points leader and defending champ Shawn Westerfeld. The twin B-Main events were taken by Jim Dues and Mike Miller.

The 22 car / 25 lap Dick Spencer Memorial feature saw Luke Hall and Chad Wilson on the front row and it appeared the two may be in store for a replay of the previous nights battle. This time it was Hall jumping out to the early lead and once again, the first leader would lead laps 1-5. However, it was Kody Swanson's turn to get the lap 6 lead that he would never relinquish.

Two caution flags on laps 9 and 11 for Toby Alfrey and Jim Dues spins were the only things to slow Swanson down. The lap 11 restart found Swanson open up a brief lead before Hall closed in for his only real challenge. For 3 laps from laps 16 through 18, Hall applied heavy pressure and actually slid Swanson for the lead, but Swanson was able to cross over and regain the lead to officially lead every lap from 6-25.

In the closing laps, Swanson encountered HEAVY lapped traffic allowing Hall to close in one more time. On the final lap, the fans rose to their feet as Hall threw the "hail mary" at Swanson in turns 1 and 2 but slid up and off the edge of the track allowing Dallas Hewitt to sneak through and steal second as Swanson raced on to victory. Behind Swanson, Hewitt and Hall were Westfall and Michael Fischesser completing the top 5. The rest of the top 10 were Justin Owen, Cooper Clouse, Chad Wilson, Shawn Westerfeld and Lee Underwood. For the second night in a row, Justin Owen was the race's "hard charger" this time advancing 8 positions.

The tour now takes its only weekend off in the month of July before a return to action at another new tour venue. The much anticipated inaugural event at Portsmouth Raceway Park will take place on Saturday, July 23rd. The scenic 3/8 mile oval is located right along the Ohio River and has not hosted a sprint car event in nearly ten years. Wingless sprint cars have not been there since 1995 when Mark Cassella won a USAC race driving the Savoy #96.

Sorry for the delay in posting these results - got home early Sunday morning to the warm welcome of a hot water heater that had gone bad and made a pretty good mess.
