+Of course, you knew that Branson and Larson were going to figure prominently in these results, now didn't you? As I was typing, it occurred to me that if these races were staged nowadays, we'd be apt to read complaints here on IOW about car counts, dust (these were Sunday afternoon events), lack of passing, and I'm sure, the race format. Funny, I don't remember any p'ing and m'ing in those days. We left the tracks thinking we had just seen the best racing on the planet. I still subscribe to that practice now, 45 or 50 years later.
+I believe the format changed during the '65 season. As you can see, the 6 car heats in the first race above transferred the top 3 finishers to the feature with the other 3 moving to the front of the next heat. I recall an event, at New Bremen I think, where Don Thomas ran in all the heats before finally making it to the feature in the consy.
+Again, my reason for posting these old results was to look back at two of the many races where "Grandpa" and "Ole Jud" dominated. I never proclaim any driver to be the "greatest of all time" simply because I haven't seen them all (don't believe what Danny and Dave tell you), BUT I can say unequivically that Branson and Larson were amongst the best I was ever priviledged to watch.

I agree 100% Marv. Branson and Larson were two of the best.

Agreed about Larson and Branson even though I only got to see Jud in just a few races. Branson was not afraid to get close to the fence to put it mildly.

I did go to the October Eldora race posted. I remember JR setting the track record but having a problem with the car in the process. This accounts for his showing in his heat race. The points battle with JR and Greg Weld was getting pretty intense at this point. After Rutherford's heat race Roger McCluskey offered to turn Mutt's #51 over to JR if he needed it to help in the points chase. The Meskowski #9 was ready to go in the consi and feature as the results show.

I played autograph hound with the Eldora program that day as a way to get close to my new heros. I am very glad that I did

As most of you probably know, the following '66 USAC sprint car season was a tragic one. We lost both Branson and Larson as well as Red Reigel, Ronnie Lux, and Dick Atkins in crashes. Johnny Rutherford at Eldora, Dave Lundy at Terre Haute and Paul Jones (I don't recall where) were seriously injured in crashes.

Hell of a price to pay, but what had been vociferous opposition to roll cages on sprint cars was down to a very few. It was waaaaaay past time.

I was not at the first race you listed here, but I'm pretty sure I was at the second.

Dallenbach? Wow. who woulda thunk it. I don't remember too many USAC sprint races he was in.

This is lots of fun Marv as always.

Those "progressive" heats (IIRC, that is what they were called) and 14 starters in the feature certainly placed a premium on qualifying well.

Thanks for the trip through the archives. Pretty cool to see. Most of the stories I have heard over the years about my "Granpa Don" involed what a terrific qualifier he was. Eldora especially. Pretty cool to see those results with all of the names that are legends. I will be making my first attempt at the big E for the Branson Larson race in a few weeks. Hopefully we roll it on the trailer and have some fun... Any of you IOW's going over stop down after and we will have a cold one. Think we are staying at the track....

IF you have the May 9, 1965 Eldora results, could you please post them. Your postings are why I check here everyday. Lee Booth

I remember the October race. My first trip to Eldora... I was 14 years old and thought at that time "Man there's a bunch of cars here" Now we all complain when there are less than 30 cars at a race...me included. Guess we don't realize how good we have it.

Chad,
Yes your grandpa was a great qualifier...and one great racer! One of my childhood heros. Looking forward to meeting you at Eldora.

Question for Marv Fish ( as well as info for Chad Branson)

Rutherford set the track record that day of 17.92. If my memory is correct wasn't it lowered ( in the spring of 1966) to 17.81 and held by Don Branson for about 15 years?
