JUNE 2ND - LAWRENCEBURG SPEEDWAY – USAC MIDGET WEEK

The stars of the USAC National Midget Series will make their annual trip to southeastern Indiana on Saturday night June 2nd for Round 5 of Indiana Midget Week at the Lawrenceburg Speedway.

Rookie Logan Seavey of Sutter, Calif., is the current USAC point leader holding a slim 3-point advantage over Justin Grant, with fellow rookie Zeb Wise another 2 markers behind. A lot could change in the standings before the USAC series hits the 3/8ths mile high banks as there are four consecutive nights of racing scheduled at the Montpelier Motor Speedway (May 29), Gas City I-69 Speedway (May 30), Lincoln Park Speedway (May 31), and Bloomington Speedway (June 1) before the series arrives in Lawrenceburg.

Joining the USAC National Midgets will be the Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint Cars and the Budweiser UMP Modifieds. Cars will hit the track for practice at 6:00 pm with opening ceremonies scheduled for 7:00 pm. Adult general admission is $25, children 7-12 are $7, and those 6 and under are free.

This is a must see. Unbelievable show last year at the burg. If I remember last year they were 4 wide. Holly Shelton led the majority of the race until the end. I know this is an overused phrase but "one of the best shows I have seen at the burg." You won't be disappointed.

ABREU DEFENDING LAWRENCEBURG SPEEDWAY INDIANA MIDGET WEEK WINNER

On June 14, 2008, the Lawrenceburg Speedway reopened at the Dearborn County Fairgrounds. The bowl-shaped quarter-mile bullring was history and in its place was a new high speed, high banked 3/8ths mile palace of speed.

Since that night an even 600 features have been contested with 227 drivers visiting Budweiser Victory Lane. Nine of those races have been USAC National Midget events with six drivers scoring wins during Indiana Midget Week – Brad Sweet (2008), Bryan Clauson (2009 & 2011), Tracy Hines (2010), Darren Hagen (2012), Zach Daum (2013), and Rico Abreu (2014, 2015 & 2017).

Abreu is one of only ten drivers to have won three or more consecutive features at The Burg (the 2016 Indiana Midget Week event was lost to inclement weather). Abreu is in an eight-way tie for third place on that list with Brady Short & Justin Grant (nonwing sprints), Mark Bruce (pure stocks), Dalton Roark (hornet), Rod Henning (mini sprint), Dale Blaney (All Star Sprints), and Joey Kramer (modifieds) who have each won three-in-a-row. A win Saturday night will move Abreu into a tie with Will McRoberts (pure stocks), just one behind Derek Groomer who won five consecutive modified features in 2011.

With Abreu looking to continue his winning streak, Garrett Abrams is looking to start one of his own. Abrams became the 45th driver (in 150 races) to win a nonwing sprint race at The Burg back on May 12th when he won his first Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint feature over former track champions Joss Moffatt and Shawn Westerfeld. Abrams’ win moved him to within 20 points of 2003 track champ Dickie Gaines in the season standings.

Along with the USAC National Midgets and Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints the Budweiser UMP Modifieds are also on the card Saturday night. Four-time track champion Brad Wieck is the current point leader with Matt Hamilton, winner of three of the five features run this season, trying to chase him down.

The USAC National Midgets will take to the track at 6:00 pm Saturday for hot laps, then qualifying, with opening ceremonies scheduled for 7:00 pm. Adult general admission is $25, children 7-12 are $7, and those 6 and under are free.

What is the seating policy for saving/marking seats? Is there availability to get in early afternoon, or gates locked all day till 5:00? Only there once before for WoO and had reserved seats. Thanks.

You may or may not get in early. But the Pit Gate located by turn two opens at 3pm. You can buy Gen Admission there (Cash only) I think. Then you can mark your seats. No Tape for marking seats. Use Bungee cords or just seats or blankets.

Front gate and turn four gate open at 5pm.

USAC Indiana Midget Week Continues June 2nd at Lawrenceburg

USAC’s Indiana Midget Week continues Saturday night June 2nd at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind. Tyler Courtney sits atop the Midget Week standings with a 20-point advantage over Tanner Thorson, followed by current national point leader Logan Seavey, rookie Zeb Wise, Lincoln Park Speedway feature winner Chad Boat, and defending USAC National Midget Champion Spencer Bayston.

None of those six drivers have found Budweiser Victory Lane at Lawrenceburg, but the four drivers who round out the top ten in Midget Week points certainly have.

7th place Kevin Thomas, Jr.
Thomas, Jr. has seven nonwing sprint wins at Lawrenceburg, including last September's $10,000 to win USAC Fall Nationals. Three of his seven wins have been under the USAC banner, placing him in a three-way tie with Bryan Clauson and Dave Darland for the most USAC sprint wins on the 3/8ths mile configuration.

8th place Rico Abreu
Abreu has won the last three USAC National Midget races held at Lawrenceburg. In the five midget races that he has competed in, he has set quick time twice, won three heat races, and led twenty-four feature laps. He also has a third and sixth place feature finish in World of Outlaw Sprint Car competition at the Burg.

9th place Jerry Coons, Jr.
Coons, Jr. has three nonwing sprint wins on the 3/8th mile, two under USAC sanction. He leads the USAC midget drivers with eight career starts in nine races at Lawrenceburg. He has led thirteen laps in the feature and has one top five and four top ten feature finishes.

10th place Justin Grant
Although Grant has only one feature start at Lawrenceburg in a USAC Midget, he has many laps around the track in a nonwing sprint car. Grant has compiled ten sprint wins – just one fewer than all-time sprint win leader Brady Short. Grant has a pair of USAC wins and a pair of BOSS wins to go along with a Dick Gaines Memorial win and a Legends of Lawrenceburg Classic win. In fact, of the 227 feature winners at the Burg, only six drivers have won more times than Grant.
