DICK GAINES MEMORIAL WINNERS

Since its inception eighteen years ago some of the best drivers in Indiana dirt track racing have competed in, and won, the “Dick Gaines Memorial” at Lawrenceburg Speedway.

In its inaugural running in 2004, 15-year-old Bryan Clauson captured his first win at “The Burg” after battling wheel-to-wheel for 30-laps with Dick’s son Dickie. After a caution flag late in the race bunched the field, Gaines’ last ditch charge off turn four at the checkered wasn’t enough. “I want to thank Dickie for racing me clean the entire race. He had chances where he could have put a wheel under me, but he didn’t,” Clauson said in victory lane.

USAC Triple Crown Champion Jerry Coons, Jr. (2009), current USAC Sprint point leader Justin Grant (2013), former Lawrenceburg Speedway track champions Jimmy Light (2008) and Joss Moffatt (2020), and three-time National Sprint Car Driver of the Year Jon Stanbrough (2015) have also raced their way to “Dick Gaines Memorial” wins.

Two-time and defending Lawrenceburg Speedway track champion Nick Bilbee and Robert Ballou are the only drivers with multiple “Dick Gaines Memorial” victories.

Ballou, the 2015 USAC sprint champion, prevailed in a late-race battle with Kevin Thomas, Jr. in 2017, taking the win by 0.449 seconds. His victory the following year was even more spectacular, passing Jarett Andretti coming out of turn four on the final lap, to win by a mere 0.121 seconds.

In the most recent Dick Gaines Memorial, Nick Bilbee took the lead on lap two, masterfully drove through lapped traffic, survived a spate of mid-race yellow and red flags, then held off a charging Thomas Meseraull to score his second Dick Gaines Memorial in three years (2019 & 2021).

19th Annual Dick Gaines Memorial Saturday at Lawrenceburg Speedway

The 19th Annual “Dick Gaines Memorial,” featuring the Kelsey Chevrolet sprint cars, will be held on August 20th at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind. Saturday night’s race honors the memory of one of Indiana’s greatest sprint car heroes, Dick Gaines, who was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1992.

Gaines, from Mitchell, Ind., started racing in April 1949. The then 16-year-old drove a 1939 Ford sedan two-seater that didn’t have any shocks. During his early years, Gaines turned over and crashed a lot in the stock cars, taking about ten years of ‘rough and tumble’ racing for Gaines to hone his racing skills.

In 1963 Gaines began driving for famed car owner Dizz Wilson. In the five years Gaines drove Wilson’s #70 it is estimated they won over 160 races. They were nearly unbeatable, winning Lawrenceburg Speedway track championships in 1963 and 1965 (he also added a third title in 1976).

In 1970 Gaines moved to Kinser Brothers Racing, teaming up with Karl Kinser. They raced all over the Midwest and south and won at places like Eldora, Salem, Indianapolis Raceway Park, Kokomo, and others. They won the “Little 500” at Anderson Speedway by four laps in 1973 and again in 1976, and in 1974 he won the “Knoxville Nationals,” beating Jan Opperman on the final lap.

In 1976 Gaines and Kinser won 29 of the 41 races entered – an astonishing 70% win average!

On September 17, 1977, while leading a race in Champaign, Ill., a rookie driver darted from the inside of the track directly in front of Gaines causing a multi-car crash. Gaines’ car flipped along a guard rail, then vaulted high into the air before slamming down and bouncing once more. Gaines’ injuries included a broken sternum, a lacerated and dislocated finger, and a severe case of double vision.

Those injuries forced Gaines to retire from a racing career that spanned nearly thirty years and in which he amassed over 600 victories. On February 5, 2000, Gaines suffered a heart attack at home, passing away at the age of 67.

Please join us Saturday night to honor Dick Gaines and the Gaines Family. The Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints 25-lap feature will pay $3,000 to win / $300 to start. Also competing will be the KOI Auto Parts UMP Modifieds, Impact Sports Pure Stocks, and the Bessler’s U Pull & Save Hornets.

The track is also hosting a “Pet Food & Toy Drive” in conjunction with their friends at Kroger. For each item you bring to donate you will receive a chance to win a $100 Kroger gift card.

General admission gates are set to open at 5:00 pm Saturday with hot laps at 6:00 pm, and opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7:00 pm. Adult general admission is $22, children (7-12) are $7, and those 6 and under are free. $3,000 to Win / $300 to Start Saturday Night at Lawrenceburg Speedway

The 2022 running of the “Dick Gaines Memorial” will once again offer an increased purse with over $11,000 up for grabs on Saturday night August 20th at the Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind. The winner’s share is a cool $3,000, and every driver that starts the 25-lap Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint feature will take home at least $300.

Dick Gaines Memorial Feature Payout:
1- $3,000, 2- $1,500, 3- $700, 4- $600, 5- $500, 6- $450, 7- $400, 8- $375, 9- $350, 10- $325, 11- $300, 12- $300, 13- $300, 14- $300, 15- $300, 16- $300, 17- $300, 18- $300, 19- $300, 20- $300.

There will also be $100 tow money for all sprint cars that do not start the feature, and a $63 hard charger award for the driver that advances the most positions from the originally posted feature lineup.

There are only three Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint races remaining this season, and drivers will be vying for a good finish Saturday night to either improve or solidify their position in the rankings.

Joss Moffatt and Sterling Cling are currently tied atop the Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint point standings with 915 points each followed by Justin Owen (-15), Garrett Abrams (-45), and Michael Fischesser (-95).

Moffatt is a former winner of the Dick Gaines Memorial in 2020, the same year Cling scored his best finish of fifth. Moffatt scored a “clean sweep” that night when he was the overall fastest qualifier, won his heat race, and led all 25-laps of the feature.

Owen has very limited experience in this race with only three starts under his belt and a best finish of 17th in his 2012 rookie season. Abrams has a pair of thirds in 2018 and 2021, while Fischesser’s best finish was his rookie season in 2010 when he placed ninth.

Tyler Kendall opened the 2022 Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint season with a bang on April 16th, collecting his first feature win at "The Burg.". Proving that win was no fluke, he followed it up with a runner-up finish to 2011 track champion Chad Boespflug on April 23rd.

Justin Grant won on June 4th during Indiana Midget Week, and Justin Owen doubled his career Lawrenceburg Speedway wins on June 11th.

At the most recent Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint race on June 18th, defending track champion Nick Bilbee was victorious in the “BOSS/Burg Showdown” giving him fourteen career wins at Lawrenceburg and tying him with Justin Grant for most sprint wins on the 3/8ths mile high banked oval.

In addition to the Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints also competing Saturday night will be the KOI Auto Parts UMP Modifieds, Impact Sports Pure Stocks, and the Bessler’s U Pull & Save Hornets. If Mother Nature cooperates, the final feature of the evening will be the 800th held on the 3/8ths mile high-banked track.

As part of their Dog Daze of Summer promo, the track is also hosting a “Pet Food & Toy Drive” in conjunction with their friends at Kroger. For each item you bring to donate you will receive a chance to win a $100 Kroger gift card.
