MAY 14TH – KING OF THE MIDWEST SPRINTS - $2,500 TO WIN

Hopefully, the third time is the charm as Lawrenceburg Speedway presents the 10th Annual King of the Midwest Sprints on Saturday night May 14th. Rainy weather has wreaked havoc on the event, forcing postponements of its originally scheduled date on April 30th and again on May 7th.

The King of the Midwest Sprints race is an opportunity for the local racers to compete in a non-sanctioned event for an increased purse of $2,500 to win and $250 to start the 25-lap feature.

King of the Midwest Sprints Feature Payout ($11,225 total)
1- $2,500, 2- $1,250, 3- $1,000, 4- $700, 5- $600, 6- $500, 7- $475, 8- $450, 9- $425, 10- $400, 11- $375, 12- $350, 13- $325, 14- $300, 15- $275, 16- $270, 17- $265, 18- $260, 19- $255, 20- $250.

As standard practice at all Lawrenceburg Speedway races, there will be $100 tow money paid to all sprint cars that do not start the feature, and $63 paid to the Hard Charger, the driver who advances the most positions in the feature.

One of the favorites Saturday is current Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint point leader Tyler Kendall. Kendall won the season opener on April 16th and followed that up with a runner-up finish on April 23rd. In his last five races at the Burg Kendall has a win, three seconds, and a fourth place finish.

Two-time and defending Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint Champion Nick Bilbee is another driver to watch. Bilbee is just the sixth driver in Lawrenceburg Speedway history to win back-to-back sprint championships. Bilbee joins Greg Staab (1982, 1983, 1984, 1985), Kerry Norris (1979, 1980, 1981), Bob Kinser (1968, 1969), Butch Wilkerson (1973, 1974), and Randy Kinser (1995, 1996) on that prestigious list.

Joss Moffatt is currently second in points after a pair of third place feature finishes to start the 2022 race season. Moffatt is a three-time Lawrenceburg Speedway Sprint Champion (2007, 2009, 2015), the only driver to earn more titles is the late Greg Staab with five. Moffatt has started six of the seven King of the Midwest Sprints features and hopes to improve upon his eighth place showing last year.

Tempe Arizona’s Sterling Cling sits third in points and has been quick all year. He timed quickest in his group both nights this season, won a heat race, and scored finishes of fourth and sixth in the features. Cling has finished in the top four in three of his last five feature starts at the Burg.

Of the ninety-four drivers to have competed in the King of the Midwest Sprints races, only 2018 Lawrenceburg Speedway Champion Garrett Abrams has raced in all seven. Abrams best showing has been in the two most recent King of the Midwest Sprints races where he has a pair of fourth place feature finishes. Abrams is currently fourth in points after his fourth place feature finish on April 23rd.

Cole Bodine rounds out the top five in points. Bodine is a relative newcomer to Lawrenceburg and Saturday will be just his fourth try on the 3/8ths mile high banks with the Kelsey Chevrolet Sprints. Bodine has a pair of fifth place finishes this season to go along with a fourth last year. Saturday will mark his first attempt at the King of the Midwest Sprints.

General admission gates are set to open at 5:00 pm Saturday with hot laps at 6:00 pm, and opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7:00 pm. Adult general admission is $20, children (7-12) are $7, and those 6 and under are free. Pit passes are $35 for all ages (pit passes cannot be purchased as an upgrade from a promo ticket, family four-pack, or a theme night).

According to this Event write-up/advertisement, Staab Won 4 consecutive Championships, 82-85. What other year did Greg Win the title? If Greg has 4, than Joss, could tie Ole Dog, this season!

Sandy, can you confirm the stats, please.

Have a great season at, "The Burg!" 😁

Staab was the champion in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985 and again in 1987.
