I guess my argument is that I do have a higher dollar engine and after 20 races, we have it rebuilt. The Last rebuild was $3500 from a reputable builder who rebuilds many of the motors you see on the track. Doing the math, that works out to be $175 a night to run. That is very cheap.
For a guy like myself, why punish me for wanting and affording to have a newer engine that i know will be more than competitive and most importantly reliable. I have no desire to purchase a spec motor, even if it's only 10 grand, because i've got one that i can run anywhere in the country with. Spec engines don't work to save money, you will get a few short term follows but people wont stay forever. If you dont see my point all you have to do is call any ford focus midget owner and ask them if they would do a spec deal again. I know we wont....very expensive and too tough to control. Racing isnt fair, the idea isnt to manipulate prices so that all the kids in school can play, the idea is that the fastest car wins each night. Turns out, when you put the title "winner" on anything people will spend whatever money it takes to get the job done. Leaving the whole thing Open rules is what made local racing so deep and strong, why in the world would you wanna take that away. |

Kevin,
The focus program was (and still is), in many ways a study in how NOT to do a spec program, but most of the mistakes - I'm sure you will agree - had nothing to do with the engine. The engine program has done what it was supposed to do. It could have been better, sure. And if the program had been allowed to grow along the lines it was intended to (combo cars) I think that all of the other problems would have been resolved. But I think you are missing the larger concept here. Technology is coming to sprint car racing - nobody is going to stop it. If we are smart, we'll do it in such a way that you will not be inconvenienced by it. You will be able to keep on doing just exactly what you are already doing and you will remain just as competitive as you are right now. It should be the new guys that conform to what you are already doing - that is how we can grow the sport and keep it healthy for the future. Don't forget - you live in an area where the sport is already healthy - but take a step back and look at the whole country - there is a LOT of room for growth and improvement. Better to take the bull by the horns than the tail, I say. |

So if a set of heads cost 12 grand today and someone can develop a double overhead cam head that gives equal or greater HP for 6 grand, Why should that be limited? I know a lot of sprint car engine problems lye in the valves and expecially valve springs, Seems to me making them work half as hard would last twice as long.
Chuck, who has no fact in this. I do know the titainium and stuff is rediculous but sometimes some of them parts last longer offseting long term cost.

like im sure was stated before this can be an option for teams with a lower budget, but if cost is what you are wanting to cut, then do away with cockpit adjusters, enforce the tire rule we have with a durometer, and go with the rule the allstars run tire gets marked eachnight, and you run one rr all night, if you have to bolt on a new one you start in the back...

I just have a question, I read through a lot of the babble on here and couldn't find anything on it. If this "Spec" engine makes 700+ horsepower, then why not just make that legal to run in the open sprints deal? Is there something about how this motor is built that doesn't fit into the rules? But you want to see car counts soar, this would be the way to do it. The bigger motors are still going to beat you most of the time, but it would get a lot more people racing, and maybe you never know, you might find a kid or guy that has some talent, but not enough money to take them somewhere or at least give them a shot.
Don't add another class though. Look at micro sprint racing right now, the car counts are way down from what they used to be becasue they're allowing older guys into the restrictor class. We used to have 50 stock, and 35 open cars a night, now we've got 20 winged, 20 non-winged, 20 restricted. It was much more fun fighting through a night to get to the feature and feel a sense of accomplishment, instead of riding around in the heat knowing it's not going to change anything for the feature. |
