One thing about Warsaw and Avilla that is really sad is how many racers are from that area, yet there is no longer an operating track there. Jeff Walker, Tony Elliott, Brett Mann, Denny England, Randy Woodling, Tyler Boggs, Terry Sroufe, Todd Sherman, Terry Hull, Scott Orr, and Tommy Beezley are some that come to mind. There are a lot more who live within a reasonable distance of those cities, but ******** and city development have prevented the chance of racing there.

Another track that isn't pronounced dead yet, but seems to be on life support is my local track, Montpelier. It's a shame to see the other great tracks in this area that are no longer around, and I don't want to see mine go the same way.

The old Cincinnati Race Bowl would be on my list. I saw my first open wheel race there in the early 50's, a Wed. night AAA show.
I drive by the site often and miss it and my dad who took me there.

Dorsey was a real tight track, maybe a true 1/5 mile. URC ran sprints there around 1985. I'm fairly sure ARDC had a couple of midget shows there, too. I don't believe Beltsville had any open wheel events. It was only around for a few years and ran first coupe modifieds and then late models weekly. Also had an annual Grand National show. I saw Richard Petty win there in 1969.

I would have to mention the dirt track at Carrollton, Kentucky where my Dad and Ernie Auxier gave Stan Bowman his very first ride in a racecar the #2 Stop Lite Grill 1934 Chevrolet chopped down modified powered by a 1948 Ford Flathead V8.Other drivers that come to mind--Earl Schmitt, Gene Cutshaw, Jim Brooks, Ralph Clary. Seems like day before yesterday but it was 1956!!

When you drive west from Spencer to Terre Haute on IN46 you can still see what's left of the track I first attended. They had ran sprints there in the past, but eventually moved to Late Models and hobby stocks before closing in the early 80's.

My dad ran there in all the different divisions over the years. After injuries from a sprint car crash there, he didn't race anymore. I remember watching a traveling volkswagen bettle series run there in the late to mid 70's.
Interesting, I am sure that you have saw SHORTBUSES post, he & i had talked about the Sweet Owen Speedway before.SB did used to race there a couple of years ago.Dale DuBious used operate that track I think.
Gary, I have to ask, is your Dad Charlie?
