Another track I wondered about for the SC cars was Rockingham. Would it be too fast? Probably. I'd also like to see Irwindale run SC again.

I guess you can tell I'm a pavement fan, whether it is sprint, midget or SC. You'll get no apologies from me on that.
Stafford is ideal but Thompson would, IMO, be even better. A big 5/8, it has always offered multiple grooves and plenty of passing. Rockingham would not be too fast although it wouldn't be far off from that. Tire wear could be an issue there. I would like to see it added to the schedule though. Irwindale was a little small though I'm sure that Russ Gamester wouldn't mind returning there! And, finally, Jim Morrison is right about Knoxville. Those shows were disasters that didn't have to happen.

I don't remember the figure, but Cappy estimated he needed a certain amount of people in the grandstands -- in addition to those in the pits -- just to break even and did not reach that point.

That was one part of the disaster. THe other was that the track was rolled so hard because of the Masters Classic the night before that the Silver Crown drivers could not even use three-quarter throttle. Track started taking rubber before the end of the first hot lap session.

Point is, what looks good on paper is not always good in real life. Many of the people in the Knoxville area had no clue what a Silver Crown car was; just a big sprint car without a wing as far as those folks were concerned. Silver Crown cars had last ran at the half-mile in 1982.

What the track really needed was a great event in 2000 that thrilled fans and got them excited for the next year. It didn't happen. That killed any hope for the immediate future.

But why limit it to half-miles? High banked 3/8ths like Tri City or Lawrenceburg would allow the big cars enough monentum to put on a decent show. Plus they're both relatively close to metropolitan areas.

WHOS GOING TO PROMOTE THIS EVENTS? YOU COULD GET THE IOW MEMBERS TO PUT UP A $1000 EACH AND THEN LEASE THE TRACKS AND DO IT! YOU ONLY NEED ABOUT $80.000 TO GET UR DONE!:checkered:

There is also Syracuse, NY which is a mile and setup for auto racing. The champ cars were big there 50 years ago on Labor Day weekend and they ran there also in the 70's to big crowds. Also recently a few years ago. I'm not usre what is going on with the 3/4 mile track at Tulsa. That is a really nice facility with a huge grandstand. I'm not sure if they still run horses there or not. It appears that the track is not being used at all... broken fencing around the inside of the track and they have paved a road across the track to get to the infield for parking. 2 years ago they had giant piles of dirt on the backstretch. The surface looks to be very sandy. They ran two races there with some problems. But there is potential there. Maybe Hahn gave up on running the place after the two fiascos.

Also there is the Sacramento mile. I think the promoter there died. The Del Mar facility is really spectacular but I think they had some problems there with the surface. I think I read somewhere that they have put down a special surface on the track for horses. Also there is the mile track at Fresno which was supposed to host a race many years ago. The San Jose mile, half mile and huge grandstand are completely gone.

Duke, Have you ever thought that the fans of today my generation dont really care if INDYCAR drivers run the Champ Cars anymore. I for one would much rather see Darland, Coons, Cottle, Hines and the others instead of INDYCAR drivers. The INDYCAR drivers are not the draw you think they are. You are not talking about Foyt, Unser, Rutherford et all like in your day Duke.
