A lot of people died back in those days but a vast majority survived that era so, I would say yes. I do believe they were more cautious back then. Also, if there were no cages etc. I would like to think that a lot of these parents wouldn't be stuffing children into these cars, as so many have these last few years. One other thing about that era was that one had to be 21 years old to even get a pit pass to simply hangout, let alone drive a race car.

That is obvious. First of all, I don't see where anyone is espousing taking away roll cages. That was a hypothetical question and, believe it or not, the main issue in the debate whether to mandate roll cages back in the very early 70's. The question was, would drivers take more chances with a roll cage? It was rare to see a slide job during the pre-rollcage era. After the cages? They're now the norm (but, obviously, not nearly as risky once rollcages came to be).

As far as, guardrail vs. 2 ton concrete slabs?? Come on. Even you can figure that out. The guard rail will give and absorb energy. The concrete slabs? Dead stop, won't budge. Yes I will take a guardrail over those slabs.

The guar rail deal makes no sense to me because i distinctly remember seeing a car cut in half by one on more than one occasion..... i gotta disagree cecil if you dont want cars coming apart because of concrete the safest way to do it is a safer barrier guardrails went out with being able to choose with the hans lol just kidding.... but really i would rather run 3 classes and allow for cleanup time than worry about cutting an arm or a head off with a guardrail

Obviously, there are some people who are passionate about this issue and would like to share their opinions on it, and they are. Does there have to be a winner? Perhaps someone who has disagreed with me. or anyone else on here, has forced me and others to look at the issue differently.

Broc, I will agree with you if we're talking 1960's style guardrailing. Basically wooden posts, 18 to 24" into the ground with railing lag bolted to them. However, technology and materials have vastly improved guardrailing. Better yet, as you suggested, SAFER barriers would be ideal. Ok, I'll trade in the HANS for the SAFER barrier!:doh:

I have been around this sport my whole life and lost a family member IN a crash. I want the safest things possible and availble to all drivers. If thats HANS,SAFER barrier I am all for it. I was not trying to dimisish the things being said in this post I was just voiceing MY opionion .
