Just for fun, I looked up the last two times nonwings ran at East Bay. The front cover of the February 8, 2006 NSSN has a 1/2 page picture of a race with the headline "Hurricane Cory Strikes East Bay". Now I wonder what that meant? There were at least 48 cars there. In the prelims, the first program, run Tuesday afternoon after Monday night was rained out, was won by Brady Short. I believe that was his first sprint victory. Heats to Brady, Ed Hassler, Jake Scott, Terry McCarl and Charles Davis Jr. Qualifiers to Derek O'Dell, Steven King, Danny Smith, Tim Shaffer and Dickie Gaines. B's to Steven King and Clayton. Feature was Short, Smith, Hassler, Stanbrough and the Cruser.

After working for about 1 1/2 hours, the track was in very good shape and they ran the Tuesday night show. Heats to Stanbrough, Clauson, Kenny Carmichael, Kruseman and Cottle. Qualifiers to Charles Davis Jr., Bud Kaeding, Brandon Petty, Clauson and Jason Sides. B's to Mat Neely and Clayton (Daron was never less than really exciting, but seemed to have a bit of trouble in either his heat or qualifier. Like the time he got both right side wheels up on the 3/4 turn wall at about a 45 degree angle, came down, gassed it down the front straight and did the same thing on the 1/2 turn wall. Unfortunately, the landing was a bit more spectular that time. Sure hope he is back in nonwings this year. But I digress. The feature was Kruseman, Roger Rager (from the last row), Clauson, Sides and Stanbrough.

Final night heats were won by Sides, Hassler, Kevin Briscoe, and Cottle. B's by Nick Adams and Clayton. The feature was all Kruser, with Clayton coming from the back to almost get him at the end, Bud Kaeding, Cottle and Zach Chappell.

In 2007, there were at least 42 cars there the first night. Heats to Mike Brecht, Dickie Gaines, Hockett, Levi Jones and Clayton. Qualifiers to Gaines, Hockett, Jason Myers, Jason Sides and Short. B's to Steve Buckwalter and Clayton. Feature was Hockett, Short, Cottle, Tracy Hines and Levi Jones.

The second night heats were won by Stanbrough, Hockett, John Heydenreich, Cottle and Mike Brecht. Qualifiers by Dickie Gaines, Zach Chappell, Clayton, Cole Whitt and Short. B's to Danny Smith and Hunter Schuerenberg. Feature was Short (must like this place), Stanbrough, Hockett, Chappell and Luke Hall.

Final night heats to Cottle, Kaley Gharst, Billy Putterbaugh Jr, and Clayton. B to Tom Busch and feature was Levi Jones, Mike Brecht, Hockett, Short and Stanbrough.

Hopefully, we will be pleasantly surprised by some other drivers showing up. Some of the locals supported the last two shows, and there were some well-known wingers who came also.

I just spoke with Ken Kenny of Hendry County Speedway in Clewiston, Florida. I was interested to learn that he apparently got the speedway last year to save it from becoming defunct and appears to have a plan for developing it. He said that they expected at least 18-20 sprint cars and specifically mentioned Jon Stanbrough, Brady Short, Damian Gardner and Chris Windom. You can sit in the main grandstand with a pit pass. I would suggest getting to the track early, since the grandstands are quite small. You can tape blankets down. There are no reserved seats. The track's web site is www.hendrycountyracing.com. Hope some IOWers can make it.

Because of some of the attacks which a few people seem to enjoy making, I offer the following disclaimer. I am a race fan, not affiliated with any team, track or promoter. I am simply passing this information along for anyone who might be interested in Florida sprint car racing.

I have some evidence that says you may be the guy in the bright colored shirt that pays for different sprint car drivers pit passes on occasion. I can not prove you are the one but I think you have the right to say whatever, whenever you want. You are definitely a race fan.

I got the impression that he owns it. He did seem like a good guy. He has some long-term plans to improve the track. During our conversation he sounded like the sort of person we need involved in the sport.

Clewiston update - at least 75 degrees today. 7 nonwing sprint drivers at the practice session tonight. Christian in the 1C; Tmez in the 4G; Justin Grant in the Baldwin 5 (light blue this year); Nick Speidel in the 21; Short in the 36; Bland Jr. in the blue and orange 38S; and Gardner in the 71.

The most exciting, and potentially tragic, part of the night was when an alert Kevin Brisco yelled loud enough and long enough to make the flagman realize that he was about to throw the green for the sprints while two people were walking at the top of the track in turn one looking for something and the push car was still on the track. Great job, Kevin!
