I would just like to give a thumbs up :thumb to Josh and the Spencer clan. We raced many Sundays at Kokomo with these people and they are always more than pleasant and friendly. As for the Pletch Pool sprinter we were almost always one of the last ones to leave any track we raced at. Terry is very friendly and loved racing and the fans. Down through the years I have seen many teams that did not make the feature that went ahead and pulled out, not us!!! Terry has missed more than his fair share of features and yet we would stay sometimes until the lights were turned out just talking, letting the kids get in the car, letting them help pick up, pretty much anything to put a smile on their faces. I hope Josh & the Spencer's come up with more sponsership and they can keep racing. We need more teams like that out there, whether they are running USAC or the local show, it's still about making the fans a memory and most of the lasting memories are made one on one in the pits.

Josh Spencer and his family have been doing wonderful things for the sport for quite a while and it is great that new people are seeing this. Thanks for sharing that letter, Kevin.

I have spent quite a bit of time talking with drivers hear lately. I ask and get the same answer from 90% of them why are we not the last race of the night. We are the headliner so to speak If they ran the last feature of the night then the fans could get into the pits to see the drivers. I admire the work the Spencers are doing for racing they are great ambassadors for it. I believe the sancitioning bodies need to look in the mirror to help the sport grow and get the fans involved with the drivers. This is JMO of course.

I've waited all weekend to post this.
I think one thing the Spencers have figured out, and others should, is that one day one of those people they stick around to greet will be someone influential with a company who ultimately decides they want to help out these fine people. They will become sponsors and the time invested in building that fan base will pay huge dividends. Jim Morrison |

Kevin Miller took the time to share a nice story from a fan's perspective -- and everything they say is 100% true. I appreciate that he shared the story, and it sounds like the Spencer's are a class act.
There are a lot of OT comments on this thread, which I feel is unfortunate. There is only one way to increase purses and keep racing -- and that is to put fans in the stands. Fans are the bread and butter of the sport. Without them, we will not survive. Increasing a fan's affinity with the drivers and teams will bring them back. One never knows who will be the next fan, new sponsor, new friend, etc. My family got addicted to racing when Pancho Carter invited two of my brothers to sit in his Indy Car in the pits after the 500 (in the early 70's I believe). As a child, this was the talk of our dinner table for the next 10 years. My brother is still a fan of Dane and Cole because of Pancho's kindness over 30 years ago! I probably would have not bought a Silver Crown team had it not been for Pancho getting my brothers so involved in the sport. LOL. Kudos to the Spencer's for being a class act, and thanks to Kevin Miller for sharing this story. Sharon Bank Silver Crown #90 |
