The biggest problem with the Brickyard 400 is NASCAR itself. Their attendance and TV ratings are down. The economy may have a little bit to do with it, but it's not the whole problem. They've needed to look themselves in the mirror for a long time, but still won't do it. They try to do certain things to help the racing, but do something else to hurt it at the same time. There are way too many things to get into on that front, so I won't. Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman were both recently fined a large amount of money for saying things that didn't help that sport. Sure other sports fine their athletes too, but this is NASCAR, so it's different. Wait, maybe it's not. Ever since Brian France took over, he has done more to hurt the sport, than help it. It started with "The Chase", to now fining their drivers for saying what they thought. What they thought is the absolute truth. You then have cars that can't race, unless you're in "clean air". NASCAR needs to fix themselves before it's too late.
The other thing that would help the Brickyard 400, lights. Now, before people start talking about tradition and such, hear me out. You add lights for the Brickyard 400 and maybe a road course race. You could have a 24 Hours of Indy, or whatever, but the option is there. However, the biggest benefit would be the Brickyard 400. Race it at night, with less heat. Also, a night race just has a more "electric" atmosphere. It's worth a shot, I think. People would come back to the Brickyard 400, at least for awhile. By the way, the lights wouldn't be used for the Indy 500. Take a look at the tracks with all the tradition, now with lights. Daytona and Darlington come to mind. JMO!
