AJ,
I just got a PM on the 2002, 2003 & 2007 yearbooks. I would really appreciate being able to make a copy of your 2005 & 2008 books. 1961 was before my time too. I have some information from a NSSN article on 12/27/1961 but I'm afraid the rest of the statistics may be lost forever. Sandy |

Sandy,
UMRA lost an awful lot in just three weeks time. They also lost much when your dad died. Jim Morrison |

The first UMRA race I attended was in 1976 at Rushville. I think Sam Brand won. Sandy can you confirm this?

Could it have been Paul Moorman? I checked the stats for that day and Sam is listed in a #36. In 1974 Dick Dwenger drove a #36 Konig powered TQ owned by Moorman. Moorman owned a sawmill in St. Maurice (just outside Greensburg). Paul's oldest son Jeff was the 1974 UMRA rookie of the year. Paul has another son Barry that has been involved in UMRA recently with Eric Fehrman and Ronnie Combs. Paul ended up racing sprints. I think my dad used to work for him (I was just a little kid back then). I do remember a picture we used to have on the mantle. It was Steve Chassey standing next to a maroon #42. It was autographed "Bob, Thanks for my first win, Steve Chassey." Sandy Lowe EXTRA INFO Butch it was Paul Moorman. While looking through the 1976 yearbook for Joe I came across your picture. You were listed in the race results as driving a #86. I looked at the point standings and the owner of that car was Jeff Moorman. By the way, you won the feature on July 21, 1976 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Salem, IN. And it looks like it was a clean sweep with quick time and a win in the trophy dash and heat. I'll try to remember to throw the yearbook in my bag and bring it to Lawrenceburg this summer to show you.

My records only show Brand winning 4 times: 7/17/1970 ElnoraIn 1976 UMRA raced at Rushville three times: June 12thThe yearbook only lists the winners and they don't give full names it's just C. Workman for Charlie Workman. I had to search through the book for the driver bio's to get the first names of some of the drivers I didn't know. Sandy Lowe |

Joe (TQ2M),
Oops! I guess I should have checked a little closer on the Sam Brand stats. Since I knew Brand was killed in 1980 I randomly pulled out the 1994 yearbook to find out how many features he had won. The 1994 book says he has 4 wins. I was just looking at my most recent book and now the records say he has 3 wins. Earlier tonight when I went through my list of feature winners when I got to win #4 I assumed that was all. Well, I was just looking a little closer at the 1976 book and I found another win (#5). This must have been your first race: July 4, 1976 - Rushville, Indiana |

Thanks for bringing up Sam Brand - I went to school with both his daughters and was so sad for them when I'd heard about his accident at Lawrenceburg. :crying:
This has been a wonderful thread-a welcome change from a lot what goes on here.:applaud: |

My fav memory was being kicked out of UMRA TQ's for being to young. So then we got a sprint car and won in my rookie year. Thanks UMRA

AJ & Mike,
I thought you might like this. It is from the 1977 UMRA yearbook: CARL NIGH, JR. Carl Nigh, Jr., 34, Rushville, rejoined UMRA midway during the 1977 season. His first TQ race was at Rushville in 1968. He recalled his first heat race when he "got to the first turn I thought I'd better back off - I did and the guy in back of me hit me so hard he knocked me into first place and I led the first lap of my first race." Carl reports he was so dazed he forgot where he finally finished. He drove TQ's until 1974. He then drove CORA midgets for three years. Carl was 1968 Rookie of the Year and Semi Champion. He and wife Cassie have two sons. When he's not racing Carl works at Columbia Lincoln Mercury in Indianapolis in the body shop. His 750 Honda is owned by Harry and Pat Kennedy of Findlay, Ohio. Harry and Pat drive over 300 miles each weekend to compete. They have been involved with TQ's since 1965. Harry drove for four years. Pat has been active as a car owner.
