Evansville driver Cliff Johns was fatally injured at Springfield in a sprint car on Oct. 7, 1973 and Doc Dawson was also lost there in a sprint car, in 1978 I believe. Jeff Thickstun perished in a sprint car at the Indy mile, 1983, I believe.
Some cars are not suited to be run on a mile track because of the inherent danger.
Ron Cliff Johns was killed in a crash with Gary Scott, serveral years later Scott was killed in a crash at Knoxville the night before the dream event which was World of outlaws and Silver crown cars on the Springfield mile which were won by Danny Smith and Larry Dickson

Jim,

Yes, I knew that Gary Scott, the driver involved with Cliff Johns, was himself killed later. I have heard that Don Nordhorn looked at Cliff's helmet and thought that it may have played a role in his death. Cliff was injured on Sunday Oct. 7th, but didn't die until Wednesday, Oct. 10th.

this sounds like someones' wet dream to me. itwould be impossible to
score such an event without transponders and i highly doubt they'll get
enough entries. but if they have it count me in!

I've seen the lates on the mile and I didn't think they were too bad. The thought of 100 different cars is ridiculous. Speaking of Dan Drinan.

The Drinan wreck was not the last day midgets ran at Springfield. They had them a few years later and Robbie Flock went end over end on
the backstretch, totally destroying the car. Amazingly, he returned to start in the champ car race! I believe USAC decided not to tempt fate
any longer after that one.

Someone commented about an insurance company not having anything to do with this event. I know one of the guys helping do this and he mentioned KNK insurance. Does this sound right? And this is really going to happen. I think its going to be a fun race. Here is a pic of the trophies they will hand out.
