Whatever happened to that old line about imitation being the sincerest form of flattery?

Does anyone else remember the Dave Argabright column in National Speed Sport News from a number of years ago about a "junior flagman" at Knoxville that idolized Doug Clark? I wonder what happened to that kid?

Unfortunately no, but I was kind of young when he was racing.

i think the kid should be in the main flagstand because the guy they have in there now is going to get someone hurt. i was there last weekend and the flagman at the burg sucks the kid was doing a better job then him.

I've got to be honest, but in this day and age when kids seem to be more interested in playing video games that it's great to see kids with, even a small set of flags, trying to flag or emulate the flag man. The average fan in the stands is getting older at nearly every track and having kids so interested in the sport that they take flagging seriously is great. I understand that perhaps some tracks have these kids maybe too close too the main flagger, but if the "Real flag person" is in the flag stand and the younger kid is in the lower grandstand then it shouldn't be an issue.
In a lot of tracks, drivers count on the lights or infield workers for notification before actually seeing the flagman depending on where they are on the track. I just think it's great to see young interest because truly, young fans are the future of the sportl. I can remember falling in love withe dirt racing in central Indiana and then being lucky enough to get a little older and experience Central PA wing racing as a teenager. However, those that know me will know that I came back to Indiana because of family, but also...because you just can't get away from those ba**s to the wall non-wingers in the Hoosier state!

Darn right i avoided it, until now. I am not going to go out there and tell the kid he can't do what he dreams of. The kid has been there for every race for 3 years now. He pays to get in and brings his family. He is the first one in the gate about every night. If this kid flagging bothers you that much let him and his parent know, or move to a different area. I support this kid 100% and i will not make him stop. I am sorry you can not tollarate this kid and his dream. As far as your son being a announcer, have you ever asked if he could help announce the line up one night?
I am sure we would love to have him get on the mic. He has dreams just like others. Sure we can't have him announcing all night long, but we will give him a chance to live his dream. Each situation is different, in every type of situation. I deal with them the best i can and thats all i can do. The JR Flagman as i like to call him, is fine with what he is doing and i will continue to support him.
Thanks for your time, Dave

and while you're in this "fulfilling of dreams" mode, I have heard that Charles Nungester yearns to slip on a tight T and some short shorts and try his hand at hawking 50-50 tickets throughout the grandstand. If true, while realizing this might be a detriment to concession sales, could you turn Chuck loose with a bucket and a roll of tickets some evening? Just a thought . :2:

I bet if you ask the REAL flagman he would say that it is VERY DISRESPECTFUL to have that kid there doing that...?Maybe all of you can request that he stands in front of your area. I could always move my seat to KC raceway I heard he's paying $3000. to win in sprints and will probably have a full field of cars. And only ONE flagman...
Please define a real flagman....I want to hear this...?

Did someone take your flags as a kid? Spill your popcorn? If it is that big of a problem... you move... you seem to be the only one B#$#@ing about it. He has stood in front of me taking lap times.... and he notices things armchair QB's don't....so Keep Flagging Kid...Go to KC Raceway.... bye bye

Dave...take care that kid....its people like him who keep this sport alive. No doubt about it. He has my full support, and I am in the pit stands...Nice response Dave and we are looking forward to getting there here this summer.
