supercross draws a lot more fans then sprint car and midget racing. i agree that it would be awsome if someone could pull this off. it would take a boat load of money though.

How about the Pontiac Silverdome? It's just sitting there empty costing the city of Pontiac lots of $$ It should be cheap to rent for the weekend! I remember they ran there a long time ago (late 80's?) dirt the first year then on the concrete the next (weather got so cold the dirt that was stored in the parking lot froze!).

I'm pretty sure that Kemper Arena has basically been replaced recently with a new arena. With its age and the fact that there's a new arena in town, it's something that can be done there, but not in Indianapolis.

Just crack the roof you are right about the ventalation system

I never got a chance to attend a race in the RCA dome. How were the crowds? Where would the pits be for the new stadium?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't there talk of a race in the Pontiac Silverdome a few years ago. I'm almost wanting to say that if might have been for Sprints and Midgets. Heck, I think it was going to be dirt, too. Anyhow, I think it would be plenty big enough and you're right, it's just sitting empty.

I do remember the asphalt late models (ASA) running there back "in the day"...

If I remember correctly the crowds were always pretty good, especially in the late 80s/early 90s. They never opened up the upper level, and it always seemed like the lower bowl was 65-70% full or so.

They used to pit them in the infield until they had that fatality ('94?) and after that they were out in the Convention Center. At Lucas Oil, I don't know where they'd pit them, besides outdoors. Brrrrr.

I remember that too, but it was just midgets I think. And it was supposed to be dirt. Fell apart for some reason just a month or so prior to the show. I think the floor space there is bigger than the RCA Dome, because Pontiac's roof is supported by trusses and not by air.

Seems like it'd be worth another shot if the place is just empty.

On a side note, the Dome is scheduled to come down at 9 a.m. Saturday. I was down there on Sunday to watch the Colts and it was sad to see the Dome in its current state. Lots of good memories in that place.

Yes, u r right. It was going to be a USAC midget race promoted by Emmett Hahn's son. It was cancelled a few weeks before it was to happen. Something about the incorrect dirt. Last I heard the land was for sale for redevelopment and they were going to tear it down.

Topical story posted last night to the Kokomo Tribune website:

If you've driven by the place, it is huge. Plenty big for what Ken is talking about, but I'm not so sure an indoor half-mile is a good idea.
