How in the world could I have forgotten the smoothest driver I've ever seen -- Dick Gaines. Whether on the quarter mile at Haubstadt or the high banks of Salem, the man was awesome. And, of course, Mel Kenyon in his prime. I hesitated to list Mel because I still get to see him race. Would love to see Tony Stewart again in a 410 non-winged sprint car or a full-sized midget on dirt. Know it's hard to believe but I have seen him in a full midget on dirt twice -- at the Chili Bowl and at a Regional race at Kokomo about five years ago. I was busy in the "real media" when Tony turned his USAC laps and only got to see him at Winchester, Salem or IRP. Same with sprints. |

I didn't get the impression the list was to include "only" drivers we had never seen run, otherwise, my whole list gets cancelled! :emote20: I think your OK adding Kenyon to your list. As good as Mel was in a midget, I've often wondered why he never had any interest in the sprint cars. He ran decent in the indy cars, never having a really first class ride but, for some reason he shunned the sprinters. Anyone out there have any insight on this subject? OOOPS!!! I misread your post, Bigmojo5! I read it as "I still GOT to see him race". I'm still interested in the answer to my question about Mel and sprint cars, however. |
