I remember when wings became organized and the early days of WOO. Keith Kaufman from PA was everywhere racing. He was always fast, would win sometimes. He could always be exciting coming through the field. I think he drove the red/purple Hamilton car, number 77.
Seemed to be when wings became a thing Kinser, Wolfgang, Swindell, Shuman, Hewitt, would win consistently. Thinking about best ever, I remember one Nationals when the cream of the crop Knoxville/Ohio/PA/CA drivers and others like Opperman were in the field. Dick Gaines come in and won. Looked as good as anyone who had ever raced there. I don't think that could be done in the same manner today.
