I think nearly ALL series and tracks that use passing points systems could do a better job of explaining the math. The thing is, I think most of them don't want fans--or even the teams--to be able to easily keep track of points. If the system is as complex and convoluted as the IRS tax code, it's nearly impossible for competitors to be able to catch a small mistake in the standings before lineups are posted. It's not that they're trying to cheat anyone, it's just that they don't want any more drama on race night than they already have to deal with.

Whenever we used a passing point system at Lawrenceburg Speedway we made a chart to hand out to all the teams as they drew their pill for a heat race starting position. You just run your finger down the starting position column to the finishing position row & you have your total points. USAC has one in their rulebook:
http://usacracing.com/assets/files/r...ifications.pdf I'm not sure if USAC goes by the posted starting lineup, or the lineup on the track when the one-to-go signal is given. At the Burg we use the posted lineup as that is the one everyone has a copy of. At the Burg we try to let everyone know the points after each race and as they are accumulated - but to do that you almost have to stop the show. When we have any down time we go over the points. Most promoters want to keep racing instead of having the program come to a screeching halt so the announcer can give the point totals. At the Burg we do try to send the point totals after each segment of racing to the pits so the competitors know where they stand. I would assume USAC does that too. |

USAC and PowrI both have the point system on their respective websites USAC under entrant and PowrI under downloads. After a heat is posted one's starting position is obtained with the one to go signal. If you move up before the one to go you lose a chance to gain more points. If you move up for any reason after the one to go you get the points for the position you started, you catch a break! Once you obtain points in a heat your position is set for your qualifier. If you move up before the one to go you still get points for your original starting spot because you earned that spot in your heat. A combination of heat and qualifier points determine your feature starting spot. Complicated? Not really. Hope this helps.

Nice tribute to a legend in open wheel racing. RIP Junior. Hoping Steve and Nick carry on the legacy. Good luck @ the Chili Bowl.
