What has affected and caused the decline of 410 Sprint Car racing in California more than anything else over the past 20 years has been the growth of 360 racing. Twenty years ago if you wanted to race a Sprint Car out here you bacisally had one way to go. 410 with CRA. Santa Maria also had a track series. The IMCA Series and the Bandit Series (1995) came on the scene and gave an alternative to drivers who could not afford or who did not want to race 410s. At the time, those series' had minimial affect. VRA started their own deal in 2000 and it has developed a great following of owners and drivers. The Bandit Series merged with Santa Maria a couple years ago and this year became the USAC West Coast 360 series. It proved to be a hit as well. It gives drivers and owners an alternative to race in a less expensive series. Who can blame the ones who choose to do so? For most of them it is cheaper and closer to their home bases.
On the promotional front, who can blame promoters who want to run 360s out here as opposed to 410s? There is a huge difference in the size of the purse. The bump in the size of the crowd is usually minimal (if any) and as they (the promoters) will tell you it does not justify paying an increased purse. You cannot blame them either.
Indeed, 410 Sprint Car racing on the West Coast is on life support.
