Sorry to tell you this the once great show loaded with indy 500 drivers on the mile dirt tracks is now a part of history!!!! $9000 to win a 100 mile race is a slap in the face!!! And tell me what promoter and track wants to put up $80.000 plus what little adv. They do! To get 80% of the drivers that race tracks in indiana weekly for $1200 to win???????????? Think about it!!!!!!!!! And the tracks they race are all junk black slick during hot laps and a big follow the leader parade! Call me a bitter old man! But i've been there and seen it!!!!!!!!!!!

You have to have a good racing surface that promotes racing so the fans that do show up will want to come back, and possibly bring a friend or family member. The surface this year at Springfield couldn't have been any less dirt-like. Go to youtube and search "1982 Bettenhausen". It won't let me embed it on here. There is one video of qualifying and one of about the first 15 laps of the race. Guess what, there was a cushion where the fastest guys were running. There was side by side racing, and this was at the beginning of the race with a full fuel load. The stands were packed, and I was one of them. In fact, I still have the program with Bobby Olivero's(winner) autograph.
There are a lot of good ideas on here about promotion and tracks working together that would work. If a couple of these ideas were implemented along with a better racing surface, the crowds would come back, the purse could go up, and the Silver Crown could once again be a must see event.

- we need good quality flyers up at every dirt track within a few hours of Springfield and DuQuoin
- start giving pairs of tickets away at the local tracks in conjunction with a couple of promotion spots at the track that night - work local businesses to sponsor a lap or something along those lines - take out a page in the program and thank the local business who sponsored a lap or a number of laps |
