the wings on these cars are not any more outrageous than the ones they ran at Eldora in the early to mid seventies if you think back on it. No one had any wing experience and most people went for the more is better concept.

Both Sargent Bros. were talented drivers. Mike was a smoother driver who had alot of success. He was also one of my favorite drivers as a kid. His car always had the coolest paint job! Mark was the "let it all hang out" driver that seemed to get in hot water with the other drivers and officials for "aggressive" driving. Their dad Mashall had pretty much stopped driving by the time I was old enough to pay much attention, but my Dad said that Mark drove more like his Dad than Mike did.

The Sargents, the Pombos. . . . Lots of families involved.

Good to see so many California folks on here. Seeing those pics brought back some memories. Grew up at Vallejo Speedway, then Petaluma (long before I ended up out here in Va.) Some of the "supers" at Vallejo were some weird creations, but the wins I remember weren't that big. Do remember seeing some that big on trips to west cap though as a kid.

Ok the #1 is Nick Recino #87 Tom Henry @ the San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway 1981/82 ish. Those are the cross over cars from the old San Jose Speedway 1/3 mile pavement to the 1/4 mile dirt at the fairgrounds.Thay ran this square tube 4 bar cars in the transihion from pavement to dirt. Most were West Capital cars with unlimited wings. Later they made a 5x5 wing rule and then moved to sprint cars by the late 80's and made the track a wide 1/3 mile. Note: Recino is the only driver to win a WOO main in a Super Mod, done at West Capital's 1/4 dirt around this time frame ,after being a champ on pavement for years .The only one out here that came close is Howard Keading and maybe Mike Sargent in the move from the old speedway to dirt. We were Late Model champs( Ed Sans) 6 or 7 times at San Jose in the 80's on the 1/4 & 1/3 mile layouts. The wings were "over the top" LOL ,but guys like Veil could run then at BIG pitch angles and win !!! It was a ton of fun to see. Miss both tracks a lot (drove my first race @ old pave track in the figure 8) My dad and I whent to almost every race from 1964-75 , then raced untill it closed in 77.Great racing !!!!

The old San Jose Fairgrounds Speedway, what a joint. Ran there in the late 80's a couple of times and darn near tore that back fence down one night. The only track I knew where you could go to watch a fist fight and a race would break out !!

Baylands Raceway Park or as we called it Wastelands Raceway Park, the only place on earth that on a mid July night you would be shivering with 40 degree fog blowing in off the bay!!

A whole lot of good races and good memories at those two places....

Agree with you completely. Grew up in South Dakota, and moved to San Jose in 1975. Was lucky to see the supers run on Pavement which was a whole new experience for me after growing up at the Oahe Speedway, Fairgrounds in Huron, Rapid City Speedway, and Miller. Spent many great nights at Baylands and later at San Jose Fairgrounds. There are a few good pics on the website promoting the San Jose racing history. You can find it here http://www.historysanjoseautoracing.com/Photo_Page.html. Just moved to Indiana last September so am looking forward to seeing the local racing up close. Had the pleasure of watching many of them at the Oval Nationals over the last few years at Perris.

No pic, but here is a video of a heat race at Devil's Bowl where the computer-created car competed in. That's the wildest looking thing I've ever seen at a sprint car race, and not in a good way... It looks like it's been involved in a bad flip already.

Looking at the picture that starts this thread I see something kind of humorous....

After I noticed the size of the wings I noticed that the car on the top seems to be pushing like a dumptruck and the car on the bottom looks like the rear bumper is about to be dragging the grond......Coincidence, I THINK NOT!!!! haha
