This was one of those races, that right after it finishes, following a few seconds of stunned silence, everybody starts milling around to where their other race fan friends are standing, with that "Wow! Can you believe that?" expression plastered on their faces. Because even though every one of the hundreds in attendance may come from different walks of life, may have different perspectives of what they see or look for when they watch a race, or may had been rooting for different drivers, they had collectively all just been subjected to the same twisting and turning roller coaster ride by these amazing performers!
Right off the bat, Alex Bright jumped to the front and established the lead, with Brent Beauchamp in second. Within a few laps Beauchamp was under serious assault by Spencer Bayston. After Spencer pried second away from Brent, he then set sail from the leader. Back through the pack, Sunshine Tyler Courtney and Justin Grant were starting to fight their way through the field, after qualifying poorly. A few laps after that Bright was under serious pressure from Bayston and it was obvious his reign as the leader was getting ready to end. Spencer went around him and began to pull away, driving a line a little higher than most of the others were using. And during all of this, Beauchamp was hanging tough and fighting off challenges to third position, which he owned. Then Chad Boat found a little something and got to second by winning furious battles with Beauchamp and then Bright. At this same time Rico and Pickens were showing signs of aggression and starting to venture up into the cushion on the turns 1 and 2 end, which had treacherous to so many, thought the evening. And Grant and Courtney would be threats to the top five soon, as they continued to advance. The big story in this one was becoming Michael Pickens, who had previously been running around in the 5th to 6th area until with about 10 or so laps to go, when he just went up into the cushion in the turns 1 and 2 end, decided he was going take it on fully and was increasingly faster on that end than anyone else, but was still using a low line on the other end. He would go around Beauchamp and Bright and the stage was set. There was a yellow, with nine laps left to go, that was a good time for everybody to catch their breath. Bayston was still the leader, Boat second and the hard charging Kiwi loomed in third! When we went back green, Pickens quickly claimed second and it was on! But then the yellow came out for Beauchamp, ending the pearl of a performance he had produced on this night. When the green came back out again, the roles had been defined. Pickens was the attacker and Bayston would be the one defending what was his, from the onslaught. Pickens changed his plan of attack at this point. He continued aggressively flying into the cushion in the turns 1 and 2 end, but then changed up on the other end of the track and began charging straight into turn three , in a manner that looked like he would use that end of the track as a ramp, if he was trying to jump into the woods, on the North end. He would then quickly cut it back and dive diagonally, almost hitting the tire in turn 4. As unorthodox as this looked, it was working and he was all over the leader. Bayston was aware enough to realize this, though and with three to go, moved his line upward entering turn three, in an attempt to interrupt Pickens' momentum. It worked the first time, but Michael was wise to it the next lap and slid under him coming down to get the "two to go". Just when it looked like the knockout punch had been delivered, Spencer came fighting back and they exchanged the lead several times over the last two laps, with Pickens driving under him to win the dash to the checker! What a race! And what a night at such a great track to experience a great race like that at.
The secondary story in this race, from my perspective was the toughness and driving ability displayed by Brent Beauchamp throughout this feature. He battled and held his own for 25 laps of this great race, before his night was over. Against bigger teams and the best the midget world has to offer. And Sunshine had raced from his 20th starting position to grab 3rd place, which was a little lost in that craziness that was the last 5 laps of this roller coaster ride.
I hope you were there and got to see this one. Those that were won't forget it anytime soon. If you weren't, try to find a replay of it and you'll see what you missed.
