Probably 88-89 I was working a couple bomber teams at Florence and got to know a lot of LM guys. Granted most of Vern's racing was before that, but he was still racing and still competitive.
It was the first World 100 bloomquist won as he had carbon brakes and won the North South and many big races that year. Put Rocket Chassis on the map. But it wasn't the Chassis that allowed him to drive in so deep. It was brakes that wouldn't overheat.
Chuck I'm going to agree with you on things like sprint week, smack down, maybe the 4 crown which usually draws 40, maybe we could rethink the process. But I also agree with some others that 32 top shelf car's is what we should expect from a stand alone usac show. I certainly remember the days when 33 on back went home.
I always want more cars, and if a tweak or two makes more teams want to saddle up against usac, then maybe it should be considered.
I will say this, both the all stars and the outlaws have different formats for different car counts to make sure the fans see enough racing and the teams have a chance.
I have seen many a post about how great qualifying is because it makes the drivers go as close to wrecking as possible to try and go fast, well that's fine, but eventually those drivers cross that line and wreck. So you are saying you want a guy that gave it his all and wrecked in qualifying, thus most likely qualifying outside this 'magic' number of 32, to just pack up and go home, so you can miss the opportunity of possibly seeing a driver drive from the back of a C and then from the back of a B to transfer into the A. Sometimes it is hard to win with you folks. lol
The more cars the better, seems like your shooting the sport in the foot by sending home a guy that might not be in the top 28 or whatever qualifiers without giving him a chance to race.
Sounds a bit ridiculous to me. If I'm going to a big race give me as much heat racing and c,b mains ect. in the top class rather then a support class.
Do I need to list the quality drivers that qualified outside the top 32, for whatever reason (many times it was out of their control), during SW (there was a USAC Triple Crown winner that would have been sent home one night, great plan?!?!)? I know you stated that format wouldn't apply during 4 crown, smackdown and sw, but they rarely if ever get more than 32 cars besides those races.
I don't understand the difference in qualifying bad and drawing a 9th place in the 5th heat when the track is wore out. To me both can put you behind the 8 ball.

Unless you got over 48 cars, there shouldn't be more than 8 in a heat. as there would be six heats taking top three. Two consi's taking three.
I like the format they use with WSS in Australia were they run several heats to set the feature. I think everyone gets to run two heat races.
" World Series Sprintcars’ Rounds. Under the new format, Time Trials and Heat Races will be spread the field into two separate groups. When the car count is sufficient (approx. 40 cars plus) the heat racing will be 2 Rounds of 4 Heats to evenly separate the field for the evening, and provide all drivers with an even chance to be placed in the crucial ‘A Main’ Feature at the end of each WSS Round.
Similar to the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic Format, at these WSS Rounds drivers will be separated into 2 groups until all points are then merged into one entire list for the Feature part of the evening. For example, in a 50 car field – the field will be seeded into 2 Flights of 25 cars, Flight 1 and Flight 2. After this separation cars in Flight 1 will only Time Trial and Heat race against each other, and Flight 2 will only Time Trial and Heat race against the competitors in Flight 2. After Heat racing is completed, the Flights are merged and our final points tally for the feature part of the WSS Round is calculated."
