Like all the other ISW shows, arriving at the track it was obvious that another huge crowd had assembled at Tri-State Speedway for Round 6 of this series. Qualifications were another reminder that there's just no limit to just how good Josh Hodges can become. Another Fast Time and you're left wondering "Is this the same guy who showed up at Putnamville early last year, looking like he was just in the learning stages of driving a non-wing sprint car?" Qualifying also provided us race fans with another little gift as it had on several stops in this series. Big hitters, like "The Mad Man" Robert Ballou, T Mez, Chris Windom, Brady Short and Dave Darland didn't qualify well and if they transferred would be starting deep in the feature field. That's the closest thing to a written guarantee that you're going to see a great race. All the heats were loaded (especially Heat 1) and front to back were probably the best set of heats I had seen all week. The headline of the B Main was seeing both Isaac Chapple and Donnie Bracken step up and race to the front. Both caught and passed points leader Brady Bacon in the process and looked to be headed for certain tranfers into the feature. But just that quick, Chappel got loose and sideways some coming out of turn 2, Bracken had nowhere to go but into Isaac's car, they would crash and both of their nights would be over. Even though Bracken was able to restart on the tail.
When the feature lined up everybody saw that the next two young drivers with their shot at becoming a first time USAC winner were Carson Short and Jarrett Andretti, as they would lead the field to the green. Right off the bat, Short took off and started to check out, as Andretti fell prey to Haubstadt aces Kyle Cummins and Chase Stockon. While this was going on, the place in the field that everybody was starting to point out to their race friends and neighbors was were Robert Ballou was at. He had started 16th and immediately started marching straight through the field, backing it in and working the bottom of the track. There was a yellow somewhere around 7 or 8 laps in and the #1 car was lining up in 7th position. He went right back to work as soon as the green came back out, but not only was Robert on the move, but Critter Malone, who Robert had passed a few laps back, was pressuring him and trying take his spot away. Then Ballou got to where he was challenging Jarrett Andretti for 5th and Jarrett proved to be a real tough out. It took Robert Many laps to take that spot away. But he finally did. But by that point, the top 3 were real far away and Ballou was running out of laps. And while this was going on Kyle Cummins had caught the leader in traffic and like most in attendance I was thinking "Hell of a race, kid, but it looks like your time as the leader is getting ready to end." I mean this is Haubstadt. And this is traffic. And you have Kyle Cummins breathing down your neck. But, then what Carson did from that point on wasn't that he merely did well in traffic. He just beared down and carved...traffic...up! Saying it was impressive would be an understatement. And Critter Malone was taking Brady Bacon's 6th position away. And then Ballou had all but closed the distance and was bearing down on Stockon as the white flag was waved. He was even closer as they hit the backstretch. Coming to the checker Carson Short was a USAC winner, followed by Kyle and Chase beat Robert to the line, under heavy pressure.
And the big crowd left Haubstadt, as usual getting their money's worth. The racing was great all night. The track was in it's usual great condition. The company was great, as always. And now we move on to the historic half mile in Terre Haute with Brady Bacon and Robert Ballou only separated by 10 points! It kind of feels like a good ol' fashioned TNT Sprint Bandits shootout.

So it looks like Ballou has to beat Bacon by 4 positions to win the points title, right? Or 5 if they both finish toward the back...
