I'll chime in on this one. I drove 250 miles each way from Stevensville yesterday for the show. First time ever to the Action Track for me. Looks like it did on TV. Reminds me of Hartford Speedway, only better clay/surface. Had a lot of time to think and contemplate.
The track prep.... ah. It was fine. So it got a little dusty. It WAS a hot day out there until the sun went down.
When you go to a big track like Terre Haute, you have to take in the race with a different perspective. You are not going to see the constant slicing and dicing like a Kokomo, but you are going to see pure HP. He who has the legs to get down those long straights wins.
I went into the infield for hot laps as advised by a friend and it was great. I then went up in the Turn 4 stands for quals and the races. I should have stayed in the infield looking back on it, for being that close to the action was great.
Turns 3 and 4 were pretty much one groove - right up on the cushion. But coming off of 4 is where the guys with the HP did their stuff. Looked like Turns 1 and 2 were a little more than one groove. However, by feature time, Turns 3 and 4 opened up a little. I wished they would have heavily watered it downstairs and left the top alone, but I am not track prep guy.
All in all..... 500 miles round trip, got in at 3:00 a.m., enjoyed the infield, enjoyed the race, got in and out without a prob, and pretty much watched what I expected on a big track like that - long legs win.
Would I go back? Not for a while, but that is due to the drive. With all said and done, it was a Wednesday Night race and I felt like I "got away" with one, you know?
Can't really complain.
