Well thank you to everybody who has helped me to make my decision and I think I'm going to give the open wheel world a try.

This is our 1st year in a midget and we just came back from the powri race in belleville illinois which was by far the best race we have ever been to. We live in Pa and race with the ARDC which is a lot of fun but if I could figure a way to move to the Indiana so we could race all the time with the powri series I would. Definately the most exciting racing I have ever seen and I have been around it my whole life!!

I guess I am quite irresponsible as all three of my sons are racing open wheel cars, two in midgets. The most fun we have had racing has been in open wheel. You cannot find better people in racing then those in open wheel racing.

How can you live with yourself ? Keep it up and someone will report you to child protection agency. :2:
ps , I wish I was your fourth son, sounds like a great time.

I'm sure on this forum, I may be the outcast for my opinion (and it is just one opinion among many), but yeah, I hold being there and providing for your kid(s) higher than getting your own jollies racing midgets (or anything else for that matter). I think if you want to race, great. Please do. I will pay to see it. But, if you are a parent of a little guy/gal, please give some thought as to the risks/benefits. Hold that kid. Take a look into his/her eyes. Then decide.

As for the fathers who have kids racing, again, only my opinion, but I think it's great. If they are grown, or near grown, or racing in a series that has no or few injuries, and no deaths, have a blast. I cannot think of any better hobby to do as a family (although fishing and camping is pretty cool).

An earlier post mentioned this position as "hilarious". I should probably let that go, as I know it's easy for some to throw a pot-shot out there and run, but that guy needs to spend a few minutes with a racing widow with kids and ask her how hilarious things are for her.

Race? Yes, please! But do it responsibly. The original poster came on here looking for thoughts on running a midget vs. running a late model. Well, now he knows mine, and I wish him all the best with his decision.

We indeed have a great time. Probably too good, LOL. They just want to race. Since their young they have aspirations to race for a living but are not obsessed with it. Its funny because NASCAR or Indycar doesn't appeal to my oldest because they do not have enough races in a season. He likes the idea of a WOO schedule.

Al, your opinion is definately not wrong or without some merit. I take safety very seriously but tradegy can happen anywhere at anytime. Recently I was talking with one of our friends whose kids play baseball. She thinks that racing is definately more dangerous than the stick and ball sports, but understands why we do it. I told here recently there was a little league player in another nearby town that got hit in the chest with the baseball and died. Very tragic. But it shows that danger exist everywhere and you just have to try and do all you can safety wise and enjoy life and have fun.

Al, I dont throw pot-shots and run, I've just learned (finally) to think about things before I type them. I just think calling out midget drivers as potentially bad parents because of they're choice of passions is kinda offending to all the the drivers whom are great parents. If the risk is something you and your family cant handle, by all means find something else to do, but dont try hanging a irresponsible tag on good parents, because they pursued they're passion. Your opinion is fine about the dangers, Its the irresponsible part that is totally wrong.

Well I guess I have been a bad parent my whole life because my son has raced since he was 4 years old. Quartermidgets, microsprints & now a full size midget. This is all he has done until now he is 16 years old. We have spent hundreds of hours together in the garage. He knows how to assemble engines, fabricate and set up race cars. While all the other kids are out at parties we are at the racetrack. I wouldn't trade the time we have spent together for anything.
