Just because there is an ambulance and medics at the track doesn't mean they are truely qualified to treat truama injuries. What medics see in their daily emergency calls are a lot different than what they will encounter at a race track and some are not trained to handle these type of injuries. Also what you see at tracks is a lack of fire equipment.

In the late 90's I was the Chief Steward for BCRA out here on the left coast. It was my policy at each track I/we went to was to evaluate the tracks EMS team. I would check in with the tracks safety crews. We would brief on issue concerning midgets, fuel shut off/ mag switch etc.... alot were stockcar tracks and had never seen a midget. In addition I determined their level of training, EMT-1, EMT-2 or Paramedic so I knew what I had to help me. I inquired about where the local rescue rig (Jaws of Life) was and the driving time to the track. Lastly, I made sure that we had the contact info for the local EMS medivac helicopter and where the LZ would be if needed. I would hope every racing organizations officials would make similar inquires...As a former driver, I just did what any driver would want done just in case....
