I once ran a show that was advertised as $2K to win, $200 to start. I'd ran several shows at that track with the same advertised payout & it was good. But this nite I ran third & got $200. We were halfway home before we opened the envelope. I later asked the guys who finished in front of me what they got. 1st got $2K, 2nd got $200. I never went back.

In reality no regular season points paying outdoor shows during the season should be compared to the chili bowl or any other indoor show for that matter. It has no competition from other races, and no chance of weather problems other than perhaps driving there. I don't think the purse there matters much as everyone wants to do a little racing in January in spite of the cost. That said, sounds like Mansfield is going to be a great place. My only concern is covering the pavement with dirt. Doesn't always work out so well

I have been involved with LM & Sprints since the late '70's. We used to haul our cars around with pick-ups (a dually if you were really fortunate) and open trailers. I laugh when I hear conversations about tow money to the high profile shows. I remember several trips to Eldora from Southwestern Indiana and we never got a dime unless we transferred into the consi. Back then, $100 tow money would have meant a lot. We used to have room for over 200 rigs in the pits at Eldora.
I had a driver sit down with me one winter and I asked about a new chassis for the upcoming season. He asked if we could spend the money on an enclosed trailer instead of on a new chassis. At that point, I realized he was more concerned with the appearance of this team instead of its performance. We soon parted ways. It is very difficult for me to have a lot of compassion for a team that pulls into the pits with a $500,000 tow rig. God Bless Hofmann Racing and guys like Kyle Cummins showing the world what can happen when you spend the money in the right place. ![]() |

They are now going to rip up the pavement and put the dirt down on the soil!
