I kinda agree with ya there Broc. Laying down laps is for qualifying and racings side by side. ALL I said way you could get around it very fast and it wasn't rough if you didn't go into rough areas. Chuck, who knows you like it smooth and a little slick but i'll take the speedy follow the leader over slow huggy pole any day ![]()

Broc, a lot of the drivers hated it because it spooked them. Most of todays sprintcar drivers rarely, if ever, see or run on a tacky track like that. Proof is the fact that 12 of them got upside down on a similar track at the opening USAC show in April. Many of them weren't prepared to set up a car for that kind of surface and were simply over hooked. What kept the track in October from being as racy was the fact that they didn't allow the bottom to be run in early enough and that made the track one and a half lanes. The bottom just stayed sloppy all night. If they had run in the bottom with the top, they could've run anywhere and it would of made for more passing. It was just incredible (and a little scary) to see non-wing sprinters going around there that fast!

if it was so amazing and the cars were so fast and the racing was so awesome, how come all the drivers hated it?
I will paraphrase Tommy Helfrich from an article in Flat Out. Drivers are by nature not interested in whats best for the fans. The kind of tracks I like as a fan make a lot unhappy. No dust. no rubber on the track, big ol cushion. Maybe even a little rough. Sorry that is what attracted me to the sport as a kid. I had been going to sprint car for 15 years and the first time I saw rubber down on a dirt track was my first Hoosier 100. (daytime 1978) |

I vividly remember them throwing *Rooster Tails back in the seventies all night long. Often there were holes or ruts and not once did Gaines and most of them B**** about it.
I find it hard to believe but I've talked to two retired drivers from the sprint ranks that state they NEVER got upside down in a sprinter. Of course durring most of their days there was no cage or only bolt ons. Chuck

I will admit it was interesting to watch... and i dont nessecarily believe that the speed was the issue or being scared, I do understand that the track needed a little help and everyone has an off night even track prep. I think the biggest issue for the driver was the lack of racing room which could be acredited to what cecil said about the one and a half lanes. The biggest problem other than that i think racers have with tracks being like that now a days is the $$$$ it takes to race, and its a lot eaisier to destroy and break equip on a track like that than it is one that is a little slick.
But who cares at least they got to race.... haha Thanks Chuck hopefully I can get back to rookie form this year... that just sounded wierd to say ha. Plan on running quite a bit more...thanks to some very generous people. |

I know this is nitpicking but this is the second time you stated this on IOW and it isn't correct. Only 8 drivers flipped....sandy
I only went by what Greg Staab told me when I asked him but!!!! You say "ONLY" eight?????!!!!!!!! I've been going to races since 1958 and have never seen "ONLY" eight get upside down. GEEEEEZ, What a boring night!!!! |
