Mr Monahan- I've thought about that issue as well, and Kevin's opinion agreeing with the still-competing drivers not going in over retired ones is a matter of written record. I've often thought of a sort of midway-point solution, where current drivers get voted upon entirely separately from all others. In essence, a current driver gets enough votes to make it, but the actual enshrinement and ceremony takes place upon his retirement. And the same number of inductees that are currently voted on for enshrinement remains the same.
I have the opinion that this extends acknowledgment to the competing drivers, and they can continue their careers for however long they choose knowing that they are going into the Hall of Fame even if they don't survive their career. Meanwhile, the deserving past champions get a FAR greater chance to not get overlooked.
Realistically, does Steve Kinser need to be a unanimous inductee under the current system? I would certainly accept the rationale of a voter who chose an overlooked past driver whose chances are dwindling instead of a guy who hasn't even the remotest chance of NOT getting in on the first ballot. In no way does it devalue the voting choice of someone who optioned against The King, as his entry was preordained. Deservedly. If Steve got, essentially, a reserved place in the Hall, and Bobby Adamson made it in with a few of those Kinser votes, wouldn't justice be served?
