In good economic theory you are correct with healthy competition driving down prices.
I'll use Lucas Oil and WoO LM's as an example where you basically have an open comp tire rule (yes, there are certain rules in place), but the open rules have tire budgets out of hand there. Multiple compounds of each tire brand for certain track conditions, etc all make for a much lighter wallet.
It's unfortunate these companies can't think of the good of the racer. They all know what the profit margin needs to be and basically have a gentlemans agreement not to undercut each other (ie. Price Fixing).
It's just the sad state of racing now. Doesn't seem like anyone is happy with the way anything is done by anyone due to the almighty dollar instead of the fundamentals of what makes this sport so dang addicting.
